LOXLEY, Ala. (March 1) - The excitement on the racetrack gave the fans who packed the house at Deep South Speedway plenty of bang for their buck during Saturday night's special evening of racing action. The revved up opener for the 2008 regular season at the high-banked red clay oval just north of I-10 and Gulf Shores provided thrills and spills with plenty of door to door competition on the track.

In the Late Model main event, Danny Joe Thomas muscled his way to the front of the field in the highly competitive Late Model division with General Motors factory engines under the hood.  Thomas endured steady challenges from Ricky Haugen and Randy Little to outrun the pair of hard chargers to the finish line.  The multi-grooved racing surface saw drivers darting and diving for positions in a preview of what lies ahead for the upcoming Chuck Stevens Motorsports 100 weekend on March 14-15 when the Crate Late Models battle for $10,000.00 to win.  Yet in this past weekend's Saturday night special event, it was Thomas who was the class of the field, much to the delight of his huge entourage of fans who were well represented as part of the capacity crowd.  Following Thomas to the trophy as the balance of the top-five finishers in the Crate Late Model division were Haugen and Little, followed by Nathan Ingersoll and Frank Wilson.  The crates will battle again this coming Saturday, March 8th as part of the regular-season full racing program schedule.

The Open Wheel Modified feature event had fans on their feet from start to finish as Chris Smith and Ritchie Beasley dueled lap after lap swapping positions while speeding around the high banks of Deep South Speedway.  Smith would take the win, but only after a tense side-by-side feud between he and Beasley ended with the checkered flag waving as the enthusiastic crowd of spectators were treated with plenty of close racing raising sparks on the track throughout the nights preliminary and feature events.
Crossing the stripe behind Smith and Beasley were Randy Booker in third, followed by Greg Hopkins in fourth and Darrell George coming home fifth.

The Limited Sportsman feature event provided an extra dose of excitement before the race ever took the green flag as pole-sitter Michael Rhodes used his prior win in the qualifying heat to make the decision to take the 'Double-Your Money' option to start the Limited Sportsman main event from the rear of the field.  With the wager made, Rhodes lined his Thermodyne sponsored number 25 racer up at the tail of the starting grid. Nathan Ingersoll roared to the front of the field, as Sean Goodwin and Rhodes put on a spectacular display of racing moves around the lightning fast oval.
Ingersoll proved to be too strong for the bet and would go on to claim the checkered flag in the Limited Sportsman feature with Goodwin and Rhodes taking the second and third finishing positions, respectively.  Rounding out the top-five would be Chuck Moore in fourth and Bret Henderson in fifth.

In addition to placing second in the Limited Sportsman feature Sean Goodwin won the Super Hobby main event with Billy Boothe finishing in the second position.  It was a special night for the Boothe Racing family and the huge crowd gathered for the night of racing and entertainment at Deep South Speedway.  Boothe Racing honored the Boothe Family matriarchs with a surprise 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration at the track with the entire family reunion taking place at Deep South Speedway as part of the Saturday night special racing activities.  Following Goodwin and Booth in the top-five of the Super Hobby feature were Andrew Bell, Travis Boner and Phillip Goudreault in the third through fifth spots.

Chad Byrd outran Josh Howell and Shanon Hodges for the victory in the Hobby Stock main event with Jerry Nellums and Chris Seale also posting top-five runs.  In the action filled Stinger division race Jamie Mozingo was the winner in a thriller with Randy Beasley and Gary Watson zooming across the finish line in second and third while Roger Kight and William
Nelson finished the event in fourth and fifth positions.
