Kelley Carlton NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (February 9) - After missing four consecutive features at Golden Isles Speedway, Dillon Wood and his team are ready to shake off the early season struggles. DWR will now set their sights on the familiar confines of Volusia County Speedway. Volusia was the sight of Wood's first ever victory in a late model type race car and he has made many laps around the 4/10ths mile Barberville, Florida facility.
"We had a brand new race car at Golden Isles. It had zero laps on it and it was a different style of Rocket Chassis than what we have been running. We definitely should have went and tested the car before trying to race it. We really struggled to get the car drivable and just when we made some progress we had a transmission failure. When we got out the back-up car we were much better but we were just too far behind at that point." said Wood.
"We just couldn't get the new car balanced. We had a really good qualifying lap going at the first Southern All Stars race but the car was just too loose through three and four and I spun it. So we had to tighten it up and then it was just too tight through one and two and we couldn't quit shoving the nose. But my dad and Alex and the guys worked really hard and we were able to learn a few things. We got behind in the Southern All Stars points a little but we can make that back up in the next few weeks." said Wood.
Dillon now looks forward to returning to VSP in a super late model. "We have won races there so we have a really good idea of where we need to be. We plan to try and work on the new car and get a better hold on it. We have a good baseline at VSP so that should really help us get going in the right direction. We weren't sure if we would go to VSP but given all the struggles we had at GIS we knew we needed to try and get the new car going before the next Southern All Star point race at North Georgia."
Wood plans to enter all of the weeks events at VSP beginning with Monday night's UMP DIRTcar Late Model event and concluding with the Saturday night World of Outlaw Late Model event on Saturday night. "We are going to either get it fixed or kill it trying to." joked Wood. "But I want to thank Steve Baker at Rocket Chassis. He has been on the phone with my dad all week trying to help us get everything straightened out. We are certain we will be able to get things headed back in the right direction."
