LMR/Ryan Neuharth CASA GRANDE, Ariz. (January 19) - Having found success in the past at Central Arizona Raceway's annual winter mini-series, John Anderson has struggled to find victory lane over the past three season. Saturday night, the 2007 MLRA National Champion found the winning combination as he wheeled his Shop Quik Convenience Stores/Quality Tire/Sunoco Race Fuels/Jim Leonardo Plumbing/Mastersbilt to the $3000, 30 lap A-Main event win.
Multi-time SWDRA Champion Lonnie Parker, Jr. debuted his new GRT Chassis from the pole next to Winnepeg youngster Ricky Weiss. At the drop of the green, Parker lead Weiss into turn one as Weiss pulled even and the two race side by side down the backstretch into turn three. Parker would secure the lead off of turn four at the end of one. Eight time WWS winner Terry Phillips was third, Trevor Glaser fourth with Anderson rounding out the top five.
Weiss would use the high side to his advantage to take the lead from Parker down the backstretch on lap two as Phillips and Glaser worked side by side for third. Phillips would quickly dispatch of Glaser in turn four and was on the back of Parker entering turn one.
As Parker bobbled over the cushion, Phillips shot low and rocketed off turn two into second and shot past Weiss for the lead entering turn three. Glaser would take advantage of Weiss one lap later to slot third relegating Parker to fourth with Murray sliding past Anderson as five were complete.
Anderson would begin his assault to the front on lap six when he would gain three spots to ride third as the yellow flew for California's Steve Drake who came to a stop entering turn three.
On the restart Phillips would lead followed by Glaser, Anderson, Murray, Jack Sullivan from ninth, Jimmy Mars from 14th, Weiss, Parker, Wednesday winner Eddie Kirchoff and Mark Voigt.
Anderson jumped to second, brining Sullivan to third relegating Glaser to fourth as Mars looked for a way past Murray for fifth. Sullivan would go side by side for second with Anderson on lap eight as Mars shot to fourth on lap nine.
The biggest mover of the races first 10 laps was Republic, MO driver Brad Looney. Looney. After starting starting 23rd he sat eighth in his Republic Glass/Diamond Pet Food/Willard Quaries/Team GRT.
Mars began to apply heavy pressure on Sullivan for third on lap 10, and as the duo entered turn one on lap 11 Mars snuck low underneath Sullivan who moved down from the middle grove and the two make contact on the exit of turn two. Sullivan would go for a spin as Mars continued and the yellow blinked on for the second time. Sullivan would be forced to retire from the event with a broken left rear suspension.
On the restart, Anderson began applying heavy pressure to the race leader Phillips on the high side. With Phillips down low, Anderson would use the cushion to pull even with the race leader on lap 12 and secured the top spot one lap later.
Half way home Anderson was beginning to pull away from Phillips as Mars continued in third, Glaser fourth, Murray fifth, Looney was up two more to sixth with Jeremy Payne now seventh from 13th.
Looney would crack the top five on lap 16 and began a three wide fight with Glaser and Murray that would wage on for the next 10 laps. Anderson would reach the back of the field on lap 21 and worked the traffic masterfully to open his lead even more on Phillips. Mars sat comfortably in third as the three wide battle for fourth raged on behind.
Looney jumped to the high side again to dispatch of Glaser on lap 22 and Murray on lap 23, quickly closing on Mars and taking third on lap 26. Back at the point, no one had anything for Anderson as the Omaha driver secured his first WWS win since 2004. Phillips would bring his Andy's Frozen Custard/Don Babb Motorsports/Hatfield Racing Engines/GRT home in second, with Looney third, the ESSI Inc/Jimmy's Pub/Dagwood Graphics/Mastersbilt by Mars entry of Mars in fourth and the Farmland Tractor Supply/Fisher Implement/TR Points Trucking/Trak-Star Chassis of Glaser rounding out the top five.
The Wild West Shootout wraps up Sunday, January 20th as the Super Dirt Late Models chase the $7500 winners check along with the BRA Dirt Modifieds and the Pure Stocks rounding out the card.
