LMR/Ryan Neuharth CASA GRANDE, Ariz. (January 12) - Hopping into a racecar in which he had won the last three times he's driven it, Jimmy Mars of Elk Mound, WI once again slipped behind the wheel of the Jess Anderson owned ESSI Inc/Dagwood Graphics/Pro Power Racing Engines, Mastersbilt by Mars and took home the $3,000 win in race one of the 2008 Wild West Shootout as Central Arizona Raceway.
High point man on the afternoon Trevor Glaser of Tangent, OR lead the field to green flanked by California runner Ron Bartels. The front row would race side by side on lap one with Glaser holding the advantage after one. Bartels tucked into second, Pat Doar slotted third, John Mitchell was fourth and Mars was fifth.
Doar would move past Bartels into second on lap 2 as John Anderson spun in turn two from sixth to bring out the races first yellow. On the double file restart, Bartels would get crossed up in turn two, causing the field to check-up and the races second yellow for the spinning Darryn Waldo.
On the Restart Glaser would maintain the lead as Doar stood second. Mars shot to third from fifith with Bartels fourth and Mitchell fifth. Mitchell would lose three more spot by lap five as Jeremy Payne jumped two spots to fifth, Jack Sullivan moved to sixth and Brad Looney up seventh from 13th.
Glaser, Doar and Mars were setting an ultra quick pace around the 3/8th mile oval as the top three began to break away from the rest of the field with 10 laps complete. Payne would get to the inside of Bartels on lap 11 as Doar began to peak inside the race leader Glaser on lap 12.
Payne would complete the pass of Bartels on lap 15 while both Doar and Mars moved in on the deck on Glaser. As the top three approached the back of the field and lappers filling the leaders rock guard, Andrew McKay would cost to a stop on the frontstretch for caution number three on lap 16.
On the restart, Mars would make the winning move as he shot from his outside row two starting spot past Doar and underneath Glaser in turn one. Doar also made it past Glaser down the backstreatch as Mars set sail for the checked flag.
Payne, Bartels, Sullivan and Looney began to mix-it-up for fourth through seventh as positions changes at a furious pace between laps 16 & 20. As Mars completed lap 20 with Doar & Glaser in tow, Bartels, Looney, Payne and Sullivan shook-out in 4th -7th as Terry Phillips resided in eighth.
Looney would challenge Bartels for fourth on lap 27 as Doar began to reel in Mars as the leaders neared the back of the field once again. Mars would hold off the challenge of his fellow Badge State resident and claim his first Wild West Shootout A-Main Win.
