Michael Despain BARDSTOWN, Ky. (January 4) - Bluegrass Speedway in Bardstown, KY will begin its 14th season of dirt track sports entertainment with an exciting 16 race schedule of events at the David and Anita Ferrell promoted ½ mile clay oval located just minutes from beautiful and historic Bardstown, KY. Weekly divisions featured for the 2008 season will include Super Late Models, Modifieds, Sportsman, and Street Stocks. Racing action will again be presented on Saturday evenings.
The season will get underway with an open practice for all divisions on Saturday April 12, from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. The 2008 racing season will officially begin on Saturday April 19, with a full program of weekly racing series action for all weekly divisions. Track points will begin on April 19 and every event will be a track points event throughout the season.
The Super Late Models will be in action and the division will carry sponsorship from 44 Auto Mart, with locations in Bardstown, KY and Shepherdsville, KY. The O'Reilly NARA Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series will sanction four events at the track in 2008. The 11th Annual Spring Sizzler will take place on April 26, paying $3,000 to win, while another $3,000 to win event will go on June 14 with the running of the 7th Annual June Jam. The 10th Annual Kentuckiana Klash will take place on July 12 and the 10th Annual Bluegrass 50 will occur on September 20, with both of those of events paying $5,000 to win each. The Independent Racing Series makes its first ever appearance at Bluegrass on August 2 for the 6th Annual My Old Kentucky Home Shootout, paying $5,000 to win. The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series returns to sanctions the showcase Super Late Model event at Bluegrass Speedway, the 8th Annual Bluegrass Classic on August 23, paying $10,000 to win, with the event also being taped by SPEED TV for later broadcast. The 5th Annual Jerry Rucker Memorial is the only unsanctioned Super Late Model special event on the Bluegrass docket for 2008 on May 10, paying $2,000 to win. Dustin Neat of Dunnville, KY is the defending Super Late Model track champion.
The Modified division will again be in action and the division will carry sponsorship for 2008 from Kentucky Cooperage, located in Lebanon, KY. The NARA Battle of the Bluegrass Modified Series will sanction the pair of extra money paying events at Bluegrass Speedway for 2008. The 8th Annual Mod Squad Bash will take place on May 17, with the 8th Annual Bluegrass Rumble set for July 26. Both events will pay $1,500 to win for the open-wheel division. Jason Wheatley of Loretto, KY is the defending Modified track champion. As a rule change, the Modified division will utilize Hoosier tires only with on the A and H compounds legal on all four corners of the car.
The Sportsman division will return and will receive sponsorship from WBRT 1320-AM. The top paying event for the class will take place on June 21 as the 5th Annual Shorty Gardner Memorial will be contested, with the winner walking away with $500. There will also be a $400 to win special event for the Sportsman division on September 13 as well. Barry Chesser of Bloomfield, KY is the defending track champion for the class. Rule changes include racers now being able to utilize a Bert or Brinn transmission, use of Hoosier Modified A or H tire compounds (open compound on the front), and drivers will also be able to box in the interior of race cars.
The Street Stock division is the entry level division at Bluegrass Speedway and again returns for more exciting action in 2008. A pair of extra money paying events for the Street Stock division will take place on May 24 and September 27, with both events paying $300 to win. Timmy Glazer of Bardstown, KY is the defending track champion for the division. As a rule change, Street Stock racers can run a small non-high rise aluminum intake on anything, except the small block Chevrolet engines.
Also on the racing docket for the 2008 season will be the 5th Annual Topless Terror Night on July 5, featuring the 44 Auto Mart Super Late Models and Kentucky Cooperage Modifieds in racing action with the roofs removed from the cars. Also, the always popular 4th Annual Legends Night will also take place on August 30, with a full racing program of weekly racing action, while many of the racers, crew members, car owners, and track officials from "back in the day" being recognized.
