Bill Martin KNOXVILLE, Iowa (July 28) - The Guss Express kept rolling Wednesday night, this time with a stop in victory lane at Knoxville Raceway.
Ray Guss Jr. took command on the 10th circuit and ran in front the last 26 times around the fast half-mile in winning the Deery Brothers Summer Series main event and adding to his lead in point standings for the IMCA Late Model tour.
The $2,000 win was his second straight in the series, his third in the last four events and fourth of the season, as well as the 20th of his Deery career.
Darren Miller ran second while hard charger Jeff Aikey got the final transfer spot from his "B" feature, passed 16 cars and finish third. Jeremiah Hurst and Brian Harris, another "B" qualifier, completed the top five.
Jay Stewart and Jeff Guengerich took turns up front as yellows slowed the early going. A lap three collision spelled the end for both Kevin Blum and T.J. Criss and Aikey cracked the top five on lap 10.
Guss hustled into the lead, then raced to a straightaway lead before another caution just after midway. Charlie McKenna got too high on the restart, caught the berm and rolled, but walked away.
The charge by Aikey took him briefly into second before Miller drove by and chased Guss to the checkers.
Robby Warner won the $250 Sunoco drawing.
Jared Timmerman topped the $500 Karl Chevrolet Northern SportModpart feature, also part of the Harris Clash program postponed because of inclement weather three weeks ago.
Cayden Carter spelled Timmerman at the point before relinquishing the lead with nine laps left, then getting caught up in a multi-car tangle.
Timmeman led Dylan Book, Nate Chodur, "B" qualifier Jeremy Embrey and Jim Gillenwater across the stripe, Book just a car length back. Seventy-one Nortern SportMods were entered Wednesday night.
Six events remain on the 2010 Deery schedule, the next at Farley Speedway on Tuesday, Aug. 3.
