Bill Martin QUINCY, Ill. (April 30) - Denny Woodworth saw a lot more of the back of the field than he wanted to before he saw the checkers fly Wednesday night at Quincy Raceway.
Woodworth held a sometimes tenuous lead the last 44 times around the track in the 50-lap Deery Brothers Summer Series main event, holding off Mark Burgtorf and then Tom Darbyshire to capture his first career win in the tour for IMCA J & J Steel Late Models. The victory was good for $2,000.
After threatening to run away from the pack, Woodworth was slowed by backrunners at midway and again late in the race. Cautions came out as the field tightened both times to take the tail enders out of play and Woodworth pulled ahead on the resulting re-starts.
Outside row one starter Mike Garland ran in front the first six laps before giving way to the third starting Wood worth, who caught up with the back of the field by the 18th circuit. Burgtorf and Darbyshire made up ground as Woodworth looked for a clear path.
The first yellow erased that traffic jam and Darbyshire slipped around Burgtorf to head the pursuit. Wood worth built a comfortable margin before catching up to the back again. Darbyshire pulled alongside with three laps to go but couldn't complete the pass and ended in second.
Burgtorf, Garland and Robby Warner rounded out the top five and Boone McLaughlin bounced back from a tough Tuesday night showing at 34 Raceway for sixth. Justin Reed qualified from his "B" feature and moved up 12 spots to finish seventh. Point leader Todd Cooney was 14th.
Woodworth became the fourth different winner in the four series events held so far this spring, joining Mike Collins and Andy Nezworski as first-time victors. Forty-two Late Models were on hand for the second night of the midweek doubleheader.
The fifth of 17 stops on the 2008 tour is Wednesday, May 21 at Highway 3 Raceway in Allison, Iowa. Pit gates will open at 5 p.m., with hot laps at 6:30 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m.
Boone, Iowa, Speedway hosts its traditional Memorial Day show on Monday, May 26. IMCA Modifieds, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks are also on the holiday card.
