Clash PR FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (April 10) - The hometown hero, Dean Bowen was able to outlast the attrition filled race at Fayetteville Motor Speedway Saturday night for his second win of the season. "It feels great to get our second of the season tonight. Our car was free at the beginning but great on the long green flag runs when the tires got heat into them" said Bowen after the race. With the win, Bowen was able to leap frog from 3rd in points to the top spot with 469 points after just 3 races.
The beginning of the Carolina Clash feature saw 4 attempts at a start of the race before the drivers could complete one lap. A scary accident happened on the third attempt when the 18m of Jeff Smith slammed into the inside turn 1 wall and bounced back out into traffic. The 17 of Tim Allen, the 360 of Craig Shuffield, the 2 of Dennis Franklin, the 84 of Jay Sessoms, and the 14 of David Taylor were all collected in the wreck. Everyone was able to continue but heavy damage was received to both Smith and Allen who spent extensive time on pit road fixing the repairs. On the next restart, another 5 car pileup in turn 4 caused the 33 of Chris Meadows to go behind the wall. The start then saw the 22 of G.R. Smith take the early lead and by lap 3, he had pulled out to a 10 car lead over the field to only have it taken away on lap 4, when Smith spun in turn 2 with a broken power steering pump. This gave the lead up to the 54 of Ricky Weeks with the 15 of Dean Bowen hot on his tail. For the next 22 laps, both Weeks and Bowen would battle it out for the top spot as they checked out from the rest of the field. But on lap 26 as he crossed the start finish line, Weeks broke something in the ignition box, ending his hopes of winning his first Carolina Clash race of 2010. This gave the lead up to Bowen with Franklin and the 6 of Chris Blackwell hot in toe. The Blackwell brothers, Chris and Timmy were showing each other some brotherly love, fighting it out for the 3rd position, running side by side for the last 10 laps of the race. For the next 14 laps, Bowen was able to checkout from the field and easily win his 2nd feature race of the 2010 season with the Carolina Clash in his Clements powered Rocket chassis. Coming home in second was the 2 of Dennis Franklin in his Clements powered Barry Wright chassis, 3rd was the 6 of Chris Blackwell in his Vic Hill powered Masterbuilt chassis, 4th was the 22 of Chris Ferguson in his Randy Clary powered Rocket chassis, in the 5th position was the 31 of Billy Thompson in his Bubba Mcgee powered Rocket chassis. After post race tech inspection, the 17 of Timmy Blackwell was found light at the scales relinquishing him of his 4th place finish.
Receiving the Comp Cams feature winner award was Dean Bowen with is 2nd win of the 2010 season. Billy Thompson was able to muscle his way past 14 cars in route to the hard charger award along with finishing the feature in the 5th position. The hard luck award was given to Jeff Smith who came into the night tied apart the series points standings but with a 20th place finish, he dropped all the way down to the 4th position in points.
The current point standings have Dean Bowen out front by 18 points over Dennis Franklin with Ricky Weeks in the 3rd position, Jeff Smith in 4th and Chris Ferguson rounding out your top 5 in points after Fayetteville.
The first heat race saw the 33 of Chris Meadows lead from flag to flag to pick up the win followed by the 25 of Shawn Beasley, the 07 of Brian Ledbetter, the 10 of Scott Shirey, the 31 of Billy Thompson, and the 91 of DJ Tyndall as your top 6 transfer cars.
The second heat race saw a scary wreck when the 51 of Randy Harmon broke something in the left front which sent him flying into the outside turn 4 wall. Harmon was able to walk away after the wreck. The 17 of Tim Allen was able to lead the first 7 laps with the 44 of Justin Labonte hot on his tail. Then on the last lap coming down the backstretch, Labonte was able to motor around Allen for the victory leading just the last lap. 2nd was Tim Allen, 3rd was the 360 of Craig Shuffield, 4th was the 14 of David Taylor, 5th was the 84 Jay Sessoms, and your final transfer car in 6th was the 92 of Stephen Evans.
The 22 of G.R. Smith was able to set fast time during qualifying with a time of 16.915 which was over 4 tenths of a second faster than the 54 of Ricky Weeks in second with a time of 17.352.
