HAUDENSCHILD, DROWN, SMITH & DAWSON WIN 3rd FEATURES; MARKHAM, WORKMAN & REED POST 1st WAYNE COUNTY SPEEDWAY WINSby Mike Swanger
ORRVILLE, OH (July 11) - It was a big 50th anniversary bash at Wayne County Speedway with a big Birthday cake, a hot dog eating contest, a kids money rush and a lot of prizes given away plus some more great racing on the track for Mid Season championships presented by Ray’s Garage. The Fisher Performance Sprints got off to slow start as Troy Kingan would stop in turn one right after the green flew and then one lap was completed when Dennis Wagner got into the guardrail in turn one and rolled over, ending up back on all fours and was pushed back to the pits where his crew decided the car had enough damage not to return. Jimmy Colvin would set the early pace with Mitch Harble in second for the opening two laps when Brad Haudenschild moved into the runner up position. It would take the Wooster driver and his Kempthorn Auto Mall, Fire & Ice Pub and J&J Racing #38k seven laps to track down Colvin and take over the lead. The only thing that would slow Haudenschild up was a caution for Colvin, who stopped on the back stretch and went pit side at that point. That would move Harble back to second on the restart but Danny Mumaw would move past him on the next circuit as Haudenschild was already long gone for his third win of the year. Mumaw would be second for the second time this year as Harble took third and Jamie Myers scored a season best fourth with last week’s winner, Nick Patterson collecting fifth. Heat winners were Harble and Mumaw.
The night before, Doug Drown edged out Rocky Owens for the win and tonight they would start side by side on the front row of the Lias Tire Super Late Model feature but there was not the results of less than 24 hours ago. Owens would get sideways in turn two on the initial lap and Ryan Markham would get into the back of Owens’ car and bend up Owens rear end while Markham would receive front end damage but everyone kept going with no caution. By the time Owens, Matt Irey, Brad Malcuit, JR Gentry, Markham and the rest of the field got back up to speed, Drown was checking out with the lead. Irey would move into second and could never track down the Hall’s Auto Sales, Wooster Glass and Kar Connection #240 of Wooster’s Drown, as he posted his third WCS win of the year. Malcuit would finish a season best third after holding off JR Gentry for several laps in the middle part of the race. Gentry would deny Markham fourth place late in the race. Malcuit and Irey picked up the heat wins.
Tyler Thompson grabbed the early lead of the Aamco Transmission Super Stock feature as points leader and two time winner Nick Smith of Wooster quickly pulled into second place from his 8th starting spot on the opening lap. Smith and his Hillcrest Trucking, Fire & Ice Pub and Butcher Block & Deli #11 motored into the lead on lap four and breezed to his third win of the season. Thompson would run and finish second all race long for his best finish while Gary Hensel Jr. pocketed his best ending with a third. Two Drivers came from deep in the starting field to get top fives with Larry Baldwin coming from 18th to take fourth while Paul McVicker started 17th and finished fifth. Heat wins went to Smith, Hensel Jr and Thompson.
The early part of the Harriger Towing Rush Late Model feature was as tightly bunched as you could get as Justin Chance, Josh Double, Jamie Wrightsman, Charlie Duncan and Ashland’s Ryan Markham were all within two car lengths of each other. Chance would be the leader for the first seven laps when Double would get sideways with Jim Nicely making contact with Double, who received enough damage to end his night. On the double file restart, Duncan, who had inherited second, out gunned Chance into the corner and came out of turn two with the lead as Markham powered past Chance at the halfway mark. A caution for a spun Hiram Bachmann on lap 12 would put Duncan and Markham side by side for the restart and this time, Markham and his new 604 motor that he won the week before, powered into the lead and put the H&T Demolition, Cool-It Thermotec and Rocket Chassis #5m into the victory circle for the first time this year. Duncan would take second as Chance held off heat winner, Wrightsman for third and Nicely recovered for fifth.
It was a battle of Mike’s for the WQKT Mini Stock feature with Michael Rose moving from his 5th starting spot to the lead in the opening lap with Michael ‘Moose’ Workman gaining second on lap three from his 7th starting position. Those two would run bumper to bumper until the caution flew on lap nine for a stopped Jeff Edwards. As the green reappeared for the restart, Workman of Shreve, was on the gas a little quicker than Rose and then held Rose off the rest of the way for Workman’s first win. Jason St. John Finished third after starting 9th as Jason Shaw scored a fourth in his WCS season debut. Points leader Doug Hensel rounded out the top five. James Priebe, Rose and Workman topped the heat races.
Lakeville’s Billy Dawson and his DJ Directional Services, Harriger Towing and Miller Racing #7b Mini Wedge led the last nine laps of their feature to chalk up his third win in ‘15, Jolene Voshel finished second while Logan Duncan was third as heat winner Matthew Moore finished fourth.
Steve Reed of Wooster went flag to flag to pocket his first Flat Track Cart win as the #8 was followed by heat winner Scott Delaney, Chuck Conway, Jamie Johnson, and Brett Chance.
Drivers continue to race weekly for nearly $100,000 worth of prizes over the season thanks to the Contingency Connection awards program at Wayne County Speedway.
Next Saturday night the Lias Tire Late Models will highlight the racing program with the second week end of the Wayne County Speedway/ Attica Raceway Park Super Late Model Series paying $1,500 to win ( ARP Friday). The Aamco Transmission Super Stocks, WQKT Mini Stocks along with the Mini Wedges and the Flat Track Carts will be in action also.
