Shannon Babb Picks Up $25k for Summer Nationals Title; Receives Gary Walters AwardMOWEAQUA, ILL (January 15) - As the off-season preparation continues for Shannon Babb Racing (SBR), they took time away from the shop to travel to Springfield, Illinois over the January 10-11 weekend for both the UMP DIRTcar Series banquet and the 12th Annual Midwest Speed Expo. At the UMP banquet on Saturday evening, Shannon Babb and his team were honored for their 2014 UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Championship. The "Hell Tour" title was Shannon's fourth of his illustrious career and was worth $25,000 to his #18 team. The Moweaqua, Illinois native racked up four Summer Nationals wins in 2014 on his way to capturing the point title and now has an astonishing 86 career victories on the grueling tour.
At the Midwest Speed Expo, Shannon also received the Gary Walters Memorial Award for outstanding achievement in 2014 and for capturing his fourth UMP Summer Nationals Championship. Gary Walters was someone that Shannon really looked up to in the pit area and receiving the award in Gary's memory was quite an honor.
"I have so many people to thank for helping us have a tremendous season in 2014," stated Babb today via telephone. "From all of the different tracks and promoters to UMP and the other sanctioning bodies we raced with, I have to thank them for putting on a lot of great shows last year. Then of course all of my great sponsors - Petroff Towing, Donley Trucking, Kreke's Powerhouse, CJI Piping, B Auto Parts, Rocket Chassis, Mullins Racing Engines, Clements Racing Engines, Schaeffer's Racing Oil, VP Race Fuels, Performance Rod & Custom, Allstar Performance, and all of my dedicated product supporters. It takes a lot of effort from everyone to pull off that entire Summer Nationals deal and I am proud and thankful of each one of my valued sponsors for their continued support!"
With the UMP DIRTcar Series banquet officially closing the book on Shannon's 2014 season, he is optimistic and ready for the 2015 campaign to begin. Still armed with potent Rocket racecars and reliable powerplants from both Mullins and Clements, Shannon plans to start his year - weather pending - at Clarksville Speedway in Clarksville, Tennessee on March 6-7. The MARS DIRTcar Series will preside over the annual running of the 'Tuckasee Toilet Bowl Classic' and $3,000 will be on the line on that Friday evening, while the doubleheader finale on Saturday night boasts a $5,000 top prize.
