Tony Jackson Jr. Surges to Wild West Shootout $5k Payday

by Ben Shelton
LEBANON, Missouri (January 13) – There’s no better way to start a season than with a big win, and Tony Jackson Jr. did just that on Sunday evening with a $5,000 triumph in his Henryetta Ford #56 Black Diamond by Club 29/Cornett Racing Engine Super Late Model in the second round of the 9th Annual Keyser Manufacturing Wild West Shootout at USA Raceway (Tucson, Arizona).

The weeklong miniseries opened on Saturday afternoon as a talent-laden field of fifty Super Late Models converged on the 3/8 mile oval, and the pill draw found Tony starting second in his heat race. He charged to a convincing heat race victory, earning him the ninth starting spot for the $3,000-to-win feature by virtue of the passing points system. During the course of the 30 lap affair Jackson Jr. advanced to a seventh place finish in the final rundown.

Forty-nine entries returned on Sunday night to wage war in the desert for a $5,000 top prize, and Tony started his outing with an impressive charge from sixth to win his heat race. With passing points determining the feature line-up, Jackson Jr. was locked into the outside-front-row alongside Don Shaw for the 30 lapper.

When the race went green, Shaw assumed the point with Jackson Jr. settling into the second spot. By the tenth circuit Tony bad begun to build momentum around the high-side of the 3/8 mile clay oval. He would make his move on Shaw as the two were even on lap eleven with Jackson Jr. moving ahead on lap twelve. Shaw would grab the lead on the inside once more before Jackson Jr. regained command for good on the fourteenth circuit. Tony controlled the final seventeen laps of the race, which ran caution-free, en route to his first ever victory at USA Raceway and the $5,000 payday. Adam Hensel, Darrell Lanigan, Jimmy Owens and Terry Phillips rounded out the top five finishers.

"All of my wins have been good," said Jackson Jr. "But this is definitely the best group of cars I've ever won against."

Action resumes in the miniseries at USA Raceway on Wednesday with a $3,000-to-win event. After a one day break, the six race affair will draw to a close with a pair of $3,000-to-win programs on Friday and Saturday before culminating with a $10,000-to-win event on Sunday evening.
