Lee wins fifth feature; Mardis crowned champion at Hilltop Speedway

MILLERSBURG, OH (August 16) - As the 2014 points season comes to an end at Hilltop Speedway, there were 120 drivers entered in the pits to make one final attempt at the championship.

Starting the night off were the Bugs-R-Gone trucks with an eleven car field. Heat race winners were Travis Hare and Cole Lillibridge. With the feature set, “Wild Hare” Travis Hare would bring the field down the back stretch to the green. However, an early caution would force Hare to restart tail, allowing Travis Winterringer to take the lead as the green came back out. Out front, Winterringer was challenged by John Large who was able to get a run and take the lead. Able to fend off challengers, Large would go on to pick up the feature win followed by Tom Garlick, Jerry Gardner, Travis Winterringer, and Cole Lillibridge. The 2014 Hilltop Speedway Champion in the truck division, Jerry Gardner.

The JPR Auto & Tire, Winning Edge and A & B Roofing and Construction Mini Wedges had a total of eighteen, ten on the small track and eight on the big track. On the small track, heat race winners were Braxton Wilson and Donnie Danley. With the features set, the small track wedges ran first. On the start, it was Braxton Wilson who would take the lead, remaining out front to pick up the win. Small track 2014 Champion, Nick Large. On the big track, it was “The Throttle Monster” Destinie Bates dominating the rest of the field picking up the win and the 2014 Championship.

There were six novice mini stocks with Samantha St. John and Colten Priebe setting on the front row of their eight lap event. Out front early was St. John, who would lead every lap to the checkered, picking up the win as well as the 2014 Hilltop Speedway Championship. Rounding out the top five, was Colten Priebe, Dustin Camp, Colten St. John, and John Maki.

The Holmes Tire Late Models had a field of 21 with “The Flying Ace” Corey Conley setting fast time with a 14.481. Picking up each of the heat race wins were Ty Myers and Mike Basich, while Mike Lonas picked up the win in the dash.

Bringing the field the start of their 25-lap feature event was Lonas and Conley. Taking the early lead was Conley who would continue lap after lap as a battle for third went on between Mike Basich and Mike Lonas. However, bad luck would strike Dave Hornikel as he was running second bringing out the caution and forcing him to the pits. With the green back out, it again was Conley taking the top spot as “The General” George Lee worked his way past Bond and Lonas to take third. Nevertheless, going on to pick up this fifth career feature, second this year was “The Flying Ace” Corey Conley followed by Mike Basich, George Lee, Mike Lonas, and Rick Bond. Picking up the 2014 Hilltop Speedway Late Model Championship was Rick Mardis.

Next onto the track was the Holmes Pest Control Street Stocks with a field of 22. Heat race winners were Mike Lonas, Kyle Moore, and Dave Potts. With Lonas and Moore setting on the front row, the green would drop for the start of their fifteen lap feature event. However, caution would come out as Kevin Potts slowed on the backstretch, eventually pulling off to change a tire and restart the field tail. With the green out once again, Moore would take the lead and that is where he would remain, picking up the win as well as the 2014 Hilltop Speedway Championship. Second went to Matt Shroyer, third to Dave Potts, fourth to Todd Swim, and fifth to Bob Chilcote.

The modified division had twenty-two drivers entered with “The Outlaw” Jesse Wisecarver setting fast time with a 15.933. Picking up heat race wins were George Lee, Nathon Loney, Bob Page, while dash winner was Kyle Brown and the last chance race winner was Kyle Dickenson.

Setting the pace to the green was Brown with “Stormin’” Norman Aronhalt outside pole. Taking over top spot was Aronhalt with a charging Wisecarver sitting second. Working on the leader, Wisecarver would put the pressure on Aronhalt who would bring out the caution in turn one and two, thus having to restart tail. With Wisecarver taking the lead, battle would ensue between Kevin Morehouse and George Lee for second. Pulling away from the field “The Outlaw” Jesse Wisecarver would pick up the win followed by Kevin Morehouse, George Lee, Robin Duston and Cory Conley. The modified 2014 Hilltop Speedway Championship went to Robin Duston.

Rounding out the night was the mini stock division with a field of twenty. Heat race winners were Jason St. John, James Priebe, and Kevin Markey. As St. John brought the field to the green, he would jump out to the lead and remain, going on to pick up not only the feature win but also the 2014 Hilltop Speedway Mini Stock Championship. Rounding out the top five was Michael Rose, Blaine Markey, Billy Parsons, and James Priebe.
