Baer Claims Season First in the Late Model Feature of the Season on Saturday Night at SSP

NEWBERRYTOWN, PA (August 16) – Dover’s Larry Baer took his first win of the season in the 25-lap Late Model feature at the Susquehanna Speedway Park on Saturday Night. Colby Dice captured his first career feature victory in the exciting 20-lap PA Sprint Car feature race. Jim Palm Jr. of Jasen Geesaman of Loysville won his first Street Stock feature of the season in the 20-lapper. York’s Patrick McClane claimed his sixth Xtreme Stock Car feature win of 2014. York’s Ricky Weaver Jr. won his sixth Road Warrior feature of the year. Dillsburg’s John Kitner won his third Mini Van feature of the season. The Camera & Autograph Night before the PA Sprint Car feature included 96 racecars from the six classes of racing. During the successful Central PA Blood Drive, thirty-one people participated in the event that took in more than 21 pints of blood.

Outside front row starter Larry Baer took the lead at the start of the 25-lap Late Model feature with Chase Billet in tow. Randy Christine Jr. made it a three car race for the lead on lap 3 when he moved past Cameron Benyou. The race remained caution-free until lap 20 when Billet stopped in turn two with a mechanical failure. This put Christine Jr. on the rear bumper for the restart. When the race resumed, Baer continued to lead and was flawless to the finish to take the win. Christine Jr. finished second with Benyou coming across the line in third. Grant Adams finished strong in fourth with J.R. Rodriguez completing the top five. Chase Billet and Adams were the heat race winners.

Colby Dice grabbed the lead from the front row at the start of the 20-lap PA Sprint Car feature. As Dice set the pace at the front, Mike Wagner Jr. began his drive to the front from a fifth place starting spot. On lap 12, Wagner moved into the runner-up spot by getting around Anthony Fiore. As Dice and Wagner came upon lapped traffic, the caution lap flew on lap 15. With a five lap dash to the finish, Wagner applied heavy pressure but could not make the pass for the win as Dice claimed victory. Fiore finished third with Kyle Lloyd in fourth. Ken Duke rounded out the top five at the end. Dice and Fiore won their respective heat races.

From the front row, Jim Palm Jr. took early lead of the Street Stock 20-lap feature. Six cars remained in the lead pack for the first half of the race. After the midway point of the race, the leaders encountered lapped traffic. Contact was made among the leaders and the lapped cars, sending everyone scattering on lap 13. Jason Townsend who was running second at the time suffered a mechanical failure, thus bringing out the caution flag. On the restart, Palm received heavy pressure from Jasen Geesaman. Two more caution late in the race bunched up the field, however Palm never faltered and went on the claim his first win of the season over Geesaman. Chris Derr finished in third. Scott Thunberg came across the line in fourth with Jimmy Combs claiming the fifth place finishing position. Palm, Geesaman and Derr were heat race victors.

The 20-lap Xtreme Stock Car feature event had John Frye take command of the top spot on the start from outside the front row. Dan Snyder challenged until the midway point of the race when Patrick McClane moved by Snyder into the runner-up spot. Frye continued to lead with McClane stalking. As the pair entered lapped traffic with two laps to go, Frye was pinned behind the lapped car as McClane scooted into the lead. At the finish, McClane took the win over Frye. Johnny Palm came home in third, followed by Matt Wampler in fourth. Jim Jacobs finished a respectable fifth. The heat race winners were Alex Updegraff and Snyder.

Ricky Weaver Jr. led the first lap of the Road Warrior 15-lapper from the sixth place starting position. One caution flag bunched up the field, but it was not enough for anyone else to take the lead as Weaver took the checkers at the finish of the race. Tom Senseney took the runner-up spot with one lap to go to cross the finish line ahead of Robert Wellman who finished third. Brian Lefebvre and Coty Marsh finished fourth and fifth respectively. Senseney and Coty Marsh were heat race winners.

John Kitner took the lead at the start of the 12-lap Mini Van feature that saw the vans four wide entering turn one at the start. Kitner set the pace after lap one and went on to take the win unchallenged. Shawn Crunkilton and Zakari Kitner finished second and third respectively after battling during the entire race. Richard Wolfe amd Daryl Kump II rounded out the top five.
