Ricky Weiss Achieves Governor Status with Dacotah Win

by Ben Shelton
HEADINGLY, Manitoba, Canada (July 29) – Ricky Weiss entered a trio of events over the weekend with the WISSOTA Blaine Brothers Challenge Series in his #7 Derrick's Sandblasting/Bloomquist/ Pro Power Racing Engine Super Late Model and came away with his first career win with the tour as well as his tenth win of 2014.

Action began on Thursday evening at Brown County Speedway (Aberdeen, South Dakota). Twenty-nine WISSOTA Late Models registered for the event, and a tenth to fourth run in his heat race earned Ricky a spot in the evenings redraw. Weiss drew the second starting spot to lock into the outside-front-row for the feature alongside Donny Schatz. In the main event Weiss ran second for much of the race before falling back to fourth late in the event. He managed a third place finish in the final rundown behind race winner, Jeff Wildung, and Donny Schatz. David McDonald and Zach Johnson rounded out the top five finishers.

On Friday night action shifted to Dacotah Speedway (Mandan, South Dakota) for the annual North Dakota Governor's Cup, as twenty-nine entries converged on the oval. Ricky drew the eighth starting spot for his heat race, and despite starting in the back of the pack he advanced to a second place finish. In the redraw Weiss was the recipient of the sixth starting spot in the main event. During the course of the feature he raced his way up to the second spot when the caution flag waved with six laps remaining. On the restart Weiss slipped back to third where he would finish behind race winner, Zach Johnson, and John Kaanta. Jake Redetzke rounded out the top five finishers.

Round #2 of the Governor's Cup was contested on Saturday night, which saw Ricky snare his first ever victory with the Blaine Brothers Challenge Series. Weiss won his heat race from the pole position, then drew the outside-front-row starting spot alongside Zach Johnson for the $2,000-to-win finale. Weiss outdueled Johnson for the race lead at the drop of the green flag, but Johnson would not give up easily. The duo swapped the lead several times throughout the course of the event, but it was Weiss who would go to Victory Lane over Johnson, Jake Redetzke, Jeff Wildung, and Eric Mass.

Action with the WISSOTA Challenge Series continues this week with an event on Thursday night at Electric City Speedway (Great Falls, Montana) before moving to Gallatin Speedway (Bozeman, Montana) on Friday and BMP Speedway (Billings, Montana) on Saturday.
