McLOUGHLIN, PALKER, JAMES & MOORE POCKET 1st NAPA WAYNE COUNTY SPEEDWAY WINS; BALDWIN COLLECTS 5th CHECKERED FLAGby Mike Swanger
ORRVILLE, OH (July 12) - It was another fast paced, action filled night at NAPA Wayne County Speedway on Malcuit Tavern night with the Twin State Auto Racing Club in attendance and giving all the feature winners a plaque. For the Lias Tire Late Models, it was also the 5th race of the NAPA WCS/ Attica Raceway Park Late Model Series and 2012 track champion Shane McLoughlin and 2013 track champion Corey Conley would bring the 21 car field to the green flag. Conley would jump into the lead over McLoughlin, who would give up second to Charlie Duncan on lap three. McLoughlin would reclaim second on lap 8 as Ryan Markham slide past Mike Bores, who was chasing after the $1,000 bonus after winning on Friday at Attica, for 4th. Doug Drown would drop Bores another spot at the 10 lap mark. With 11 laps to go, McLoughlin and his Riesbeck’s Food Market, Nussbaum and Lias Tire #9 would shoot out of turn two in the low groove and power past Conley for the lead as they had gone side by side for the previous three laps and at the same time, Drown took 4th from Markham. On lap 19, Duncan would slide high in turn two and that allowed both Drown and Markham to edge past him. With the final laps clicking off, Conley made one last run on McLoughlin but could not get by as the Nashport driver held on for the win. McLoughlin also won the American Racer award for racing on their tires and also collected awards from the Contingency Connection, as did all the winners as they award over $2,000 a night for the drivers. Conley won the Hoosier Tire award for finishing second as Drown finished third and received the VP Fuels Hard Charger award after starting ninth. Markham, who is leading the points in both Napa WCS points and the two track series was 4th as Duncan held on to fifth followed by Bores. Coby Bartram was the fast qualifier as Conley, Larry Kingseed and McLoughlin topped the heat races.
Two time defending track champion Andrew Palker of Lodi, who has been running with the UNOH All Stars this season, came to NAPA WCS on an off night for the traveling series and the King Inspection, Albreight Trucking and El Campesino Restaurent #57x led all the way for the Fisher Performance Sprint win. As Palker, the quick timer, built up a big lead, the fans eyes were on the battle for second as Kirk Jeffries and Jason Dolick sliced and diced for second with Dolick securing second place on lap 18. Bob Lime finished 4th as Troy Kingan finished 5th. Points leader and 4 time winner Brad Haudenschild pulled off on the second lap of the feature with mechanical issues. Palker and Haudenschild won the heats. The red flag came out in the 1st heat race as Shawn Hubler started to spin in turn four and collected Pete Grove with both cars ending up side down. Grove was transported to the hospital with a broken leg.
Tony Cline set the pace for the opening lap of the Thrifty Muffler Super Stock feature but after that it was all Larry Baldwin of Randolph as he would drive the Midas Muffler, Park Ford and Baldwin Motorsports #7up into victory lane for the 5th time this year. Tyler Thompson would run second until the halfway mark when 10th starting Bob Daugherty would take over but he could not track down Baldwin. Thompson would hold on to third with JR Gentry, driving Mitch Caskey’s #43 would finish 4th and Tyler Nicely took fifth. Baldwin was the fast qualifier and won a heat race as did Chase Alexander.
Doug Hensel led the opening 7 circuits of the WQKT Mini Stock main with Jordan James of Loudonville hounding him every inch of the track and finally took the lead on lap 8 but Hensel came right back on lap nine. Jordan and his Thompson Memorials, Lochevale Farms and Loudonville Tire #83 grabbed the lead for good on the next lap and kept it until the checkered flag flew for his 1st win in his first time at NAPA WCS this season. Moose Workman edged past Hensel, the heat winner, on the last lap for second with Adam Kern and Elvis Conkle rounding out the top five.
After finishing second three times this year, Matthew Moore of Granger Township led all but the opening two laps in the NAPA Mini Wedge feature aboard the Mars Trucking and Apache Auto Salvage #98 for his 1st win. Tanner McLoughlin tried everything he could to re-pass Moore after leading the first two circuits but came up short. Billy Dawson and Robbie Ledger battled back and forth for third and also challenged McLoughlin for second several times before finishing in that order. Caitlin Johnson wrapped up the top five. Moore also won the heat race.
Racing continues next Saturday night, July 19th with the Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association coming in for a $2,500 to win feature. The Thrifty Muffler Super Stock, the WQKT Mini Stocks and the NAPA Mini Wedges are on the racing card as the Lias Tire Late Models have the night off. Check out
