Dale McDowell's $100k Dream Comes True at Eldora

by Ben Shelton
WELCOME, North Carolina (June 10) – Dale McDowell stood atop the winner's circle in 2005 at the World 100 at Eldora Speedway (Rossburg, Ohio), but it was a bittersweet moment as he inherited the title by default, when the apparent winner crossed the scales light.  Since that day he has wanted more than ever to claim an undisputed victory in a crown jewel at the famed, 1/2 mile oval.  On Saturday night that dream came true for McDowell as he parked his #17m TDR/Warrior/ECR Racing Engine Super Late Model in victory lane after scoring the $100,000 triumph in the 20th Annual Dirt Late Model Dream.

“Thank goodness that I made it to victory lane,” said the relieved McDowell, who has been pursuing a full-fledged party on Eldora’s grand stage since his tempered World 100 post-race in 2005.  “I won the World in 2005, but Shannon Babb actually won it.  I just was the benefactor of his misfortune (Babb was disqualified for being 10 pounds light), so it feels great to be able to celebrate in victory lane.”

Team Dillon Racing pilot, Dale McDowell opened the 20th Annual Dirt Late Model Dream 100 on Thursday night.  Seventy-eight entries registered for the $2,500-to-win preliminary event, and a third place finish in heat race action locked McDowell into the tenth starting position for the 25 lap feature.  During the course of the main event Dale advanced four spots to a sixth place finish in the final rundown.

Friday night action saw the winner's check boosted to $5,000, as a pair of twin 25 feature events highlighted the evening once again.  Dale locked into the pole position for the heat race via his qualifying efforts, and went on to score the win earning him the fourth starting spot in the 25 lap feature.  McDowell pulled by early race leader, Darrell Lanigan, heading down the backstretch on the fourteenth circuit to take over the top spot.  McDowell survived a late-race charge from Lanigan with two laps to go to score the victory over Lanigan, Jason Feger, Scott Bloomquist, and Chris Madden.

Preliminary action on Saturday evening found McDowell unable to advance to a transfer spot to the feature via heat race action, but a win in his consolation event positioned him starting 22nd on the grid for the 100 lap, mega-event.  As the feature went green Dale began marching through the field, and quickly worked his way into the top ten.

McDowell turned up the heat further in the second half of the event as he began working his way through the top five.  A lap 60 restart allowed Dale to work into the second spot, and he began to pressure the leader, Scott Bloomquist, for the top spot.  Exiting turn two on lap 72 McDowell was able to race to the lead and once out front never looked back on his way to the victory in the crown jewel.  John Blankenship, Scott Bloomquist, Jimmy Owens, and Billy Moyer rounded out the top five finishers.

"This win wouldn't have been possible without my great team," said McDowell.  "The entire Dillon family, the Childress family, as well as my great crew, and sponsors...they all made this possible.  This was a true team effort.
