Austin Hubbard Wins One for Huey at Bedford

by Ben Shelton
SEAFORD, Delaware (June 3) - Austin Hubbard scored an emotional $4,000 victory on Sunday night at Bedford Speedway (Bedford, Pennsylvania) in his #11 Trinity Logistics/Mastersbilt by Huey/Cornett Racing Engine Super Late Model.  It was a victory especially dedicated to one person.

“This one’s for Huey,” said Hubbard, whose four-race-old MasterSbilt by Huey machine sported a specially-designed wrap memorializing the late Huey Wilcoxon.  “It means a lot for me to win in a car that you could say was the last car he worked on in his shop.”

Austin Hubbard competed in the opening round of the Appalachian Mountain Speedweek (AMS) Series on Friday night at Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex (Markleysburg, Pennsylvania).  Forty-three entries were on hand for the $4,000-to-win race, and Hubbard locked into main event via a third place finish in heat race action. In the main event he raced to a third place finish behind race winner, Tim McCreadie, and Tim Fuller. Vic Coffey and Mike Lupfer rounded out the top five finishers.

Saturday night took the team to Hagerstown Speedway (Hagerstown, Maryland) for the second round of the AMS, which also posted a $4,000 top prize, and once again saw forty-three entries for battle.  The night started on a sour note as Hubbard was penalized for jumping the start while his heat race.  He went on to finish fifth in his heat race and eighteenth in the feature rundown.

The tour rolled into Bedford Speedway (Bedford, Pennsylvania) on Sunday evening. With thirty-seven cars entered it would prove to be an exceptional night for the team.  Austin qualified for the front row of the $4,000-to-win finale and led all 40 laps en route to his first victory of 2014, which came over Vic Coffey, Jeff Rine, Jason Covert, and Rick Eckert.

The Appalachian Mountain Speedweek tour drew to a close on Monday night at Port Royal Speedway (Port Royal, Pennsylvania).  Forty-one Super Late Models registered for the $4,000-to-win program, and Austin earned a spot in the evenings redraw via preliminary action.  After starting fourth in the main event Hubbard settled to a sixth place finish in the final rundown behind race winner, Tim McCreadie, Rick Eckert, Jamie Lathroum, Tim Fuller, and Dan Stone.

Austin finished fourth in the final miniseries standings.  Full results from the events and the final standings are available at www.LMSSpeedweek.com .
