Ray Cook Fifth in SAS Showdown at Hornets Nest; Back to Promoting Spring Nationals

BRASSTOWN, NC (May 8) - Ray Cook and the Tommy Pope Racing team invaded Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Alabama on May 2-3 for a huge doubleheader that accompanied NASCAR weekend across the road at Talladega Superspeedway.  On Friday night, a $2,000 top prize was up for grabs in the unsanctioned weekend opener.  Ray timed in fourth quickest in Group A during qualifying, which locked him into the inside of the fourth row in the main event.  The Brasstown, North Carolina ace then ran a solid race in the feature and brought his #53 MasterSbilt machine home in the eighth position.

At the track deemed as the "Hornets Nest" on Saturday evening, the Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series (SAS) rolled into town and a $4,000 payday was on the line.  Ray laid down the fourth fastest lap in Group B during the time trial session and later started the 40-lapper from the outside of the fourth row.  The popular driver known as the "Tarheel Tiger" then worked his way past three competitors during the A-Main to claim a strong fifth place performance behind only victor Todd Morrow, Jason Hiett, William Thomas, and Jake Knowles.  Complete results from TST can be obtained by clicking on www.talladegashorttrack.com.

Ray will not be behind the wheel of a racecar over the upcoming May 8-10 weekend, as he will put his promoter's hat back on to head the Old Man's Garage Spring Nationals Series.  The second year mini-tour is slated to wrap up this weekend with a trio of events at Duck River Raceway Park in Wheel, Tennessee, Boyd's Speedway in Ringgold, Georgia, and Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, Georgia.  Ray is scheduled to return to racing competition on May 17-18 in a pair of $10,000 to win World of Outlaws Late Model Series showdowns at Smoky Mountain (TN) Speedway and Duck River (TN) Raceway Park.  You can view the upcoming schedule dates for the #53 team by logging onto www.RayCook53.com.
