Basich Picks up First Feature at Hilltop Speedway; Settles, St. John, Aukland, Hensel, Moore, and Potts Also Picking Up Wins
May 3, 2014/ Jessica Mardis After days of non-stop rain, Mother Nature changed her ways as the sun was shining on the Hill for the 97 cars that entered the pits for a spectacular night of races at Hilltop Speedway.
The Barnes Performance Unlimited Modifieds were the first to roll onto the track with a 14-car field. Setting fast time for the night was Chris Basich with a time of 16.080 placing him in the dash, which he went on to win. Picking up the heat race win was Nathon Loney. Coming to the green it was Basich setting pace with Robin Duston on the outside. Out front early was Basich, while a battle for second was underway with Duston and “Stormin” Norman Aronhalt who had worked his way up from eighth. However, during a caution, Aronhalt went pit side leaving third open for Josh Morrow who had also worked his way through the field from ninth. On the final restart Duston made a hard charge at the leader but Basich was able to maintain position and pick up his first ever feature win at Hilltop Speedway. Rounding out the top five were Josh Morrow, Nathon Loney, and Rory Reed.
The JPR Auto and Tire, Winning Edge Auto Body and A&B Roofing and Construction had a field of 16 with Brayden Renfrew and Chase Settles picking up heat race wins. From outside pole, Settles was out front early in the night’s feature event. Able to fend of multiple challenges from Destinie Bates, Settles was able to go on to dethrone Bates and pick up his first ever feature win. Third went to Karyssa Beagle, fourth to Taylor Huggins and fifth went to a track visitor.
The Novice Mini Stocks were lead to the start by Colten St. John who jumped out front early and that was where he remained picking up yet another feature win. Rounding out the field was Dustin Camp, Colten Priebe, Samantha St. John, and John Maki.
With a field of 19, the Holmes Tire Late Models rolled onto the track. With a time that was nearly eight tenths of a second faster than the rest of the field it was “Chargin” Charlie Duncan setting fast time with a 14.067. Picking up heat wins were Dan Snyder and Mike Basich with the dash win going to Rick Aukland.
It was Aukland on point leading the field down the backstretch with George Lee outside. As the green dropped, going into turn one and two, Lee spun, bringing out the caution and placing Charlie Duncan outside pole for the complete restart. Battling through lap traffic, coming out of two Duncan was going for the pass as the caution came out. With the restart, Aukland jumped out front with Duncan and Rick Mardis battling for second. As the battle continued, Lee was able to use that advantage and work his way back from the tail to second. Picking up third was Rick Mardis, fourth was Charlie Duncan and fifth went to Steve Prince.
The Barnes Performance Unlimited Mini Stocks had a field of 16 with heat race wins going to Gary Hensel Jr. and Jordan James, setting the front row of the night’s feature event. Leading the field to the green, Hensel jumped out front and remained picking up the win followed by Jordan James, Jason St. John, Michael Rose, and Keven Markey.
It was Brad and Kyle Moore proving their dominance once again in the Holmes Pest Control Street Stock division each picking up the win in the heats. With Kyle Moore leading the field of 15 to the drop of the green, it was Brad Moore who was able to wheel his way past and take the lead along with the win. Rounding out the top five was Kyle Moore, John Wilson, Dave Potts, and Denny Shear.
Rounding out the night was the Bugs-R-Gone Trucks with a field of 13. Heat race winners were Jerry Gardner and Kevin Potts setting the front row of the night’s feature event. Jumping out to an early lead was Gardner, however, after spinning coming off of four was forced to bring out the caution putting Potts on point for the restart. As the green flew, Potts maintained the lead and picked up the win. Cole Lillibridge picked up second from the tail, third Jack Large, fourth Travis Winterringer, and fifth went to Dwain Powell.
