Inclement Weather Postpones First Two NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS Races
by Roby Helm
OCALA, FL – Inclement weather has forced postponement of the first two nights of racing for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Division Bubba’s Army Winternationals Presented By Rock Auto.com at Bubba Raceway Park. The five-race series has been rescheduled to run on Thursday through Sunday.
Racing is scheduled to resume on Thursday night with a 40-lap $2,000-to-win race, with another 40-lap $2,000-to-win race scheduled for Friday night. There will be two complete shows that will run on Saturday, with a 40-lap $2,000-to-win race on Saturday afternoon, followed by a 50-lap $3,000-to-win race on Saturday night. A 40-lap $2,000-to-win race will be run on Sunday afternoon.
On Thursday and Friday, NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Pre-Race Registration will be open from 3 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. The Drivers Meeting is set for 6:15 p.m., with Hot Laps scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
On Saturday, the gates open at 9 a.m. with NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Pre-Race Registration and Technical Inspection for both races from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Drivers Meeting is set for 11 a.m., and racing is scheduled for 12 noon. At the completion of the 40-lap main event, there will be a break to clear and readmit the grandstand area, and perform track prep before the start of the 50-lap racing program.
On Sunday, the gates open at 9 a.m. with NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Pre-Race Registration and Technical Inspection for both races from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., and racing is scheduled for 12 noon.
With a field of 39 race cars set to do battle, rain set in at Bubba Raceway Park late Tuesday afternoon, and a weather forecast of more rain, wind, and cold temperatures for Wednesday forced track officials to postpone until Thursday when clear and warmer weather is in the forecast.
The car count should go up on Thursday, as several teams north of the Florida boarder were snowed in by a rare Deep South snow and ice storm. Portions of I-75 in Georgia were closed on Tuesday afternoon. One of the snowed in race teams included that of the defending NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Champion Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN.

Weather Postpones NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS For Third Straight Day At BRP
by Roby Helm
OCALA, FL (January 30) – Three days of rain and cold temperatures has postponed the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Bubba’s Army Winternationals Presented By Rock Auto.com for the third straight day at Bubba Raceway Park. An encouraging weather forecast for Friday and Saturday has led track and series officials to schedule three races in the next two days.
Friday’s race will now be a 50-lap $2,500-to-win race. There will be a double show on Saturday. On Saturday afternoon, the 40-lap $2,000-to-win race that was postponed on Tuesday night will be run. After the completion of that event, the grandstand will be cleared, and readmitted for a 50-lap $3,000-to-win evening race.
“The weather has just wreaked havoc at Bubba Raceway Park this week, as the winter storm that left snow and ice north of us has dumped a lot of rain here over the past three days, along with temperatures in the 30s,” NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Director Adam Stewart said. “We tried to put the grader on the track at noon today, and it sunk about ten inches into the track. There was no way we could get the track in a safe and competitive condition for tonight.”
The winter storm Stewart spoke of has affected race teams all week just trying to get to Florida for what was scheduled to be five straight nights of racing for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Division to open the 2014 season.
“We had 39 teams signed in on Tuesday night when we rained out, but we had several teams that were still trying to get here through the snow and ice north of us,” Stewart said. “There were major interstates closed down in all directions. We know of several teams that couldn’t leave until this morning coming from Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee.”
On Friday, NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Pre-Race Registration and Technical Inspection will be open from 3 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.
Rain checks from the Tuesday night rainout will be honored for the Saturday afternoon race, as will competitors’ entry fees paid on Tuesday. Since Qualifying had not taken place on Tuesday, new competitors that were not at the track on Tuesday may enter the Saturday afternoon race and will be added on to the tail of a group for Group Qualifying.
After discussing the situation with officials and race teams, the decision was made to cancel the Sunday race that was originally rescheduled after the Tuesday night rainout.
