Hedgecock records sixth 411 Motor Speedway victory; gears up for ‘King of the Mountain Fall Classic’ at Smoky Mountain Speedway LOUDON, Tenn. (September 17) - With several races still scheduled this fall, reaching double digit victories for Cory Hedgecock of Loudon for the 2013 racing season would appear to be a given.
A phenomenal campaign for Hedgecock continues getting better, as the 21-year-old captured his sixth Limited (Steel Head) Late Model feature win this past Saturday night at 411 Motor Speedway, which was his eighth overall victory this season. His two other wins occurred at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, and Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville.
Also for Hedgecock, back during the month of August he lowered the standard by establishing a new track record in qualifying at 411 Motor Speedway with a fast-lap at 13.428 seconds. For the season Hedgecock has a total of 11 pole awards, with eight at 411 Motor Speedway, and one each at Volunteer Speedway, Smoky Mountain Speedway and Boyd’s Speedway in Ringgold, Ga. Hedgecock’s also recorded
During time trials Saturday at 411, Hedgecock was third quickest. But he won the first of two heat races (Ryan King winning the other) to earn the pole position for the 30-lap feature.
King jumped out to the lead at drop of the green, though Hedgecock was glued to his rear bumper and even sticking the nose of his mount to the inside of King racing off the corners. King led the opening 10 circuits before Hedgecock moved ahead to lead lap 11. King moved back to the point to lead lap 12, before giving way to Hedgecock once again to lead lap 13.
With the fans standing on their feet cheering, King barely led Hedgecock at the flag stand on lap 14. Hedgecock got around King for a lead he would never relinquish on lap 15, en route to visiting victory lane for the second consecutive week. Hedegecock has now captured two wins, along with a runner-up finish to National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame member Ronnie Johnson in the NeSmith Dirt Late Model Series touring event in his last three races at 411 Motor Speedway.
“Wow, what an awesome race we had Saturday night with Ryan (King) to get our sixth win of the season at 411 Motor Speedway, and our eighth victory overall,” said Hedgecock on Monday afternoon from his race shop. “We won the first heat race to put us on the pole for the feature, but there on the start Ryan jumped out ahead of us from the outside of the front row. I knew we had a very good car and I felt within about 10 laps or so, once we got in a good rhythm under green flag racing conditions, I’d be able to get around Ryan to take the lead. We battled each other hard, running side-by-side there for a few laps just swapping the lead back and forth. Once we got out front, I got settled into a good pace and we began to put some distance between us and King.
“My grandfather (Mike Hedgecock), my father (Chad) and I, we really take a lot of pride in our racing program and we put forth the effort to try and win each time we pull into a racetrack. Coming from our drag racing background, we’ve had to learn this whole deal about the dirt late models. We’ve got good horsepower under the hood, and that’s definitely a big plus. Dad’s learned a lot on the setup and from my perspective, I’ve grasped how the car should feel and I can give him good feedback when I pull into the pits on what (chassis) changes we might need to make to hopefully get the car working a little better. Overall we’ve just really got our racing program going quite well. A lot of people sitting in the grandstands just see what takes place on race night, but trust me it all begins back at the shop during the week. If you’re going to run up front and contend for victories, you’ve got to put the time in preparing your equipment.”
Several special events are on the racing calendar for Cory Hedgecock Motorsports before season’s end, and the team will be in action this coming Saturday, Sept. 21, at Smoky Mountain Speedway for the King of the Mountain Fall Classic. The team is also eyeing the big $6,000-to-win Steel Head Clash @ The Gap at Volunteer Speedway on Saturday, Oct. 12.
