Hedgecock pulls off weekend sweep with Smoky Mountain and 411 victories LOUDON, Tenn. (July 31) - Cory Hedgecock of Loudon brought the broom out this past weekend, with impressive performances to make a clean sweep in winning Friday at Smoky Mountain Speedway and then on Saturday at 411 Motor Speedway.
With a stellar field of 25 Limited Late Models present at Smoky Mountain Speedway, Hedgecock set fast-time in qualifying to earn the pole position. At drop of the green flag, he grabbed the lead at the start and never looked back en route to capturing the $1,500 victory over Jason Welshan, Josh Henry, Josh Collins and Skip Arp.
After unloading the race car Saturday morning back at the shop, Cory Hedgecock Motorsports changed the setup from the night before at Smoky Mountain Speedway to get the car ready to race at 411 Motor Speedway. And the team hit the right combination.
Hedgecock was quick in practice, but track management decided to change the race format and have Limited Late Models run heat races instead of time trials to determine feature starting positions. Hedgecock found himself in a loaded heat. The 20-year-old battled his way forward, taking the lead on the white flag lap and held on for the win.
Starting the main event from outside of the front row, Hedgecock powered into a lead he would never relinquish to record the $1,000 victory over Rusty Ballenger, Shane Roberts, Brad Seagle and Ruben Mayfield. Hedgecock actually lapped up to the rear bumper of the third-place finishing car of Roberts.
After winning at both Smoky Mountain Speedway and 411 Motor Speedway, Hedgecock now has visited victory lane on six occasions in 2013. Also on the season, Hedgecock has recorded 10 pole awards with a total of 15 top-five finishes.
“This was definitely a first for us in making a clean sweep of a racing weekend,” said Hedgecock earlier in the afternoon while taking a break from work at the family-owned Eagle Racing Engines in Loudon. “We got off on the right foot Friday with a really strong run at Smoky Mountain Speedway. That was a really good field of cars gathered, and to run like we did and bring home the victory, it just doesn’t get any better.”
The run to victory Saturday at 411 Motor Speedway turned the heads of many, with Hedgecock’s strong outing in lapping up to the third-place finishing car.
“To be perfectly honest, I didn’t care one bit for how the track suddenly changed the race format and had us run heat races for our feature starting spots,” said Hedgecock. “None of the other drivers really liked the deal either. But, it is what it is and you’ve just got to go with the flow, I guess. At the drop of the green we got off to a really great start. I just got into a good rhythm early and began clicking off some awesome laps.
“For the second consecutive night we really had a great driving car. A good driving car and some Eagle Racing Engines horsepower under the hood, when you combine those two we had the winning combination. Racing for us is all about family, and just to see the smiles on the faces of my grandfather, father, mother and my girlfriend, that’s what it’s all about. When you’re running good and winning races, you can’t wait to get back to the track and get back behind the wheel.”
