Tim Dohm Dazzling in Jack Shutts Memorial, Takes Home $3G

by Scott Wolfe
STEWART, OHIO (July 26) -- Oh! How quickly the tides can change! This theme shared a common thread throughout the potent night of racing at Billy Jarrell's Skyline Speedway Friday night in front of a packed house for the combined Jack Shutts/Greg Schilling Memorial racing events.  The Murray City Bandit, Jeremy Berwanger staged a late race pass to claim the Octane AMRA Modified Greg Schilling Memorial over early leader Anthony Kinkade, while in the Jack Shutts Kryptonite AMRA Late Model main "The Showstopper" Tim Dohm, Cross Lanes, WV brought home the $3,000 win in an embattled run with Tyler Carpenter, Josh McGuire, and Chris Garnes.

Nearly 100 cars flooded the pit area and the stands were packed to watch good racing and to honor two of racing's fallen heroes.  The stage was perfect as the 3/8 mile red clay oval was groomed to near perfection and continuously racey throughout the evening.   The multi-groove action and star-studded field made Friday one of the year's greatest events with the Sara Bond "Big Three" and Harvest 50 yet to come in 2013.

In the Greg Schilling Memorial Octane AMRA Modified race, Dan Ebert from Lake Shore, Minnesota was the Hard Charger moving up eleven positions from 18th to 7th. Ebert earned an extra $100 from Poske's Performance Parts for his effort. Not only did Ebert make the long tow, but he also took the long road to the feature, finishing fourth in his heat, and having to race from 8th to second in the final B-main event.  Ebert started scratch in the feature, one car ahead of 19th starter Travis Dickson, who won the silent auction to gain a spot in the Schilling Memorial.

Grayson, Kentucky's Josh McGuire had fast time in the late models with a 13:10 clocking and Kenny Johnson, Mineral Wells, WV had fast time in the modifieds with a 13:91.  Fast time awards from C&S Racing Photo were presented, while Dave Millhone of Millhone Motorsports upped the modified ante with an extra $100 making it a $199 payoff for Johnson.

Wetzel's Collectibles sponsored both fast car Dash's with six lucky children selected via a ticket draw to draw starting positions for the top six late models.  Donald Parry drew the number one pill for Josh McGuire.  Other participants were Cameron Barr, Matt Hafner, Ryan Spear, Allie Hoosier, and Sydney Statts.  As a result of winning the dash McGuire picked up an extra $100 and Parry won a Scooter.  Matt Hafner won a Gary Gould t-shirt for Tyler Carpenter's second place finish.

Six star-studded heat races helped whittle the 52-car modified field down to the respective 18 starters--plus one.  Four of the six heat races were action packed , down to the wire qualifiers.

At the start of the AMRA Octane main event Kinkade's 144 jumped into the early lead, however, Kinkade's rear quarters were heat-tempered from the fire-breathing dragons grinding on his rear bumper.  Berwanger was there every inch of the way waiting for the right moment, while Kenny Johnson battled Kevin Moorehouse and Jessie Wisecarver for third.

Early in the race Mike McPherson and Johnson made contact, sending both nearly out of control, but quick thinking by both veterans righted their cars without incident.

A "Racey" track provided fast low, middle, and high groove racing.  The first caution did not fly until eight laps of the thirty-lapper were in the books.  Tanner Wilson made contact with Jesse Hartman and collected Nick Corbitt as well.  Wilson was whistled for the caution.

As the race restarted all eyes were on the Kinkade/Berwanger battle.  Berwanger and Kinkade engaged in a friendly round of multi-lap bumper tag. Berwanger pulled alongside Kinkade numerous times but couldn't quite ride out the momentum.

Great racing from number one to 16 continued as Kenny Johnson meticulously climbed back into the mix.  Johnson went to the high-side and rode a wave of momentum off turn two in passing both leaders to take the lead.  Johnson's turn four exit was not as memorable.

A lapped car collected Johnson, spawning a melee that eliminated Jarrad Willis on the 24th circuit and also collected Jessie Wisecarver.  Kinkade reverted back to the lead, while Berwanger maintained second.  Johnson had another good start, but again a caution voided his efforts.

Rick Aukland was now in the hunt after a race-long battle with Moorehouse, Wisecarver, Andy Bond and Roy Roush.

On the 25th round, Berwanger went to the high side, then after luring Kinkade up a groove made a cross-over move to the bottom where Kinkade slammed the door shut.  Berwanger again went to the top and stayed there where he made the race-winning pass  of Kinkade to collect the $1,699 win plus the Phantam Race Gear $500 Gift Certificate.

"I was certain I had a better car than him (Kinkade), but he was fast where he needed to be," said Berwanger.  "I didn't want to get out of my groove and get freight-trained, so I rode it out.  When I saw Kenny (Johnson) blow by us on the high side, I knew I had to get there (to the high groove) and that was the key to the win."

The win was the second in a row for the defending Skyline Speedway champion.  Kinkade came home a disappointing second, saying "I thought we had it.  We went so far with the lead, I thought we had it, but Jeremy just had a little more than I did off the top."

Aukland bagged Johnson for third.  Fifth through tenth were Kevin Morehouse, Roy Roush, Dan Ebert, Andy Bond, Mike McPherson, and J.P. Roberts. Doug Adkins was disqualified after winning the fifth heat for not crossing the scales, and Aukland was DQ'd in the dash, but was stilled scored sixth and maintaining his feature spot after passing tech through his qualifying heat.

Heats went to Aukland, Moorehouse, Wisecarver, Berwanger, McPherson, and Kinkade who also brought home the dash win!  Kinkade donated his $99 for winning the dash back to the Schilling Fund.  B-Main winners were Doug Henry, Nick Corbitt, and Chris Stotts who made a last lap pass for the win.

Tyler Carpenter, Parkersburg, WV was the class of the Kryptonite AMRA Late Model field--that is, for much of 22 laps.  Carpenter led the first six laps after getting the jump on pole-sitter Josh McGuire.  Chris Garnes shuffled McGuire back another notch while Chris Carpenter took over fourth.

It seemed like all the cars were jockeying for position througout the pack.    Carpenter survived spins from Jason Gillian and Zach Dohm,  but on the sixth lap Garnes smoked Carpenter high against the turn two wall.  After a lap eight spin for Steve Bigley, Carpenter got a good restart and overtook Garnes for the lead. All the while McGuire was within a car length, trying to figure out the tacky Skyline surface.

Garnes again went to the high side and took command for laps 18, 19, and 20.  Meanwhile, Carpenter rode the inside rail. With a soft rear spring set up, Carpenter lifted his left front high in to the air, while blitzing around the inside.  Dohm had since moved into fourth and engaged in a torrid dual with McGuire.

On lap 23 Carpenter got about 3 feet too low and snagged an infield uke tire and flipped while in the lead. The incident collected Tim Dohm and tore the right rear portion of his spoiler off.  With the red waving, fans and Carpenter stood in awe.  Garnes assumed the lead, but when the green was ready to wave at restart, Garnes went pitside with mechanical woes.  His misfortune was a blessing for Dohm who had just secured third from McGuire.

Dohm held of McGuire the last eight laps despite missing much of his rear air foil.  Dohm charged on to victory and the $3,000 Jack Shutts Memorial win.

"This track was racey all over tonight," said Dohm.  "Perhaps the best I've seen it.  The straights were tacky and you could really drive it in hard.  But the main thing is I think the right rear tire finally kicked in for me.  It got some heat in it and the car just really took off."

McGuire pulled into victory lane with a flat tire in second and Carpenter brought home third.  Rounding out the top ten were Ralph Withem, KC Burdette, Travis Brookover, Freddie Carpenter, Zach Dohm, Dan Morrison, and Chris Garnes.

Heats went to Zach Dohm, Colten Burdette, and veteran Larry Bond, while Fast Freddie Carpenter took the B-main win.

In the Jack Shutts Memorial Kryptonite AMRA Late Model race, Freddie Carpenter was the hard charger moving up nine positions from 16th to 7th.

The Mike's Auto Body Mini-Wedges ran two features.  Austin Washburn took the first win and Zach Carr claimed the second.  Each feature was dedicated to Jack Shutts and Greg Schilling.

Skyline is off Aug. 2 and Aug. 9 due to the Athens County Fair.  Racing will resume August 16 and August 23.
