Promising World of Outlaws Late Model Series Run On Home Turf Goes Bad For Chub Frank; $100,000 Dream At Eldora Up Next
 
BEAR LAKE, PA (June 5) – Chub Frank first chance to run a World of Outlaws Late Model Series event on his home turf – Stateline Speedway in Busti, N.Y., a one-third-mile oval his father helped build – in seven years had the makings of a great night.
 
But just as the 51-year-old driver from Bear Lake, Pa., was beginning to flex his muscle in last Saturday night’s 50-lap A-Main, misfortune dive-bombed his hopes. He was about to move into fifth place on lap five when a broken axle on his Corry Rubber/Lake Shore Paving/Hino Toyota Rocket No. 1* caused him to fall off the pace, absorb a hit to the rearend and spin in turn two.
 
While Frank’s crew somehow managed to repair his machine in time to get him back on the track without losing a lap, the 10th-place finish he salvaged certainly wasn’t satisfying because he knew what could have been.
 
“It was a good car,” said Frank, who started eighth. “I don’t know if we would’ve won the thing or not, but I do know I was passing (eventual winner Shane) Clanton (for fifth) when the axle broke. I felt like we definitely were coming on.”
 
Frank praised the work of his crew, who allowed him to rally for a top-10 finish.
 
“Hey, they changed both axles out of the car and we still didn’t lose a lap – that’s pretty good,” said Frank. “When I got back out there I wasn’t sure if I was a lap down or not, so after I ran (the back of the pack) down from a straightaway behind I kind of took it easy until a caution came out. I was waiting to hear (WoO LMS race director) Bret (Emrick) say on the one-way radio who got the Outlaw ‘Pardon’ (the ‘Lucky Dog’-type deal that puts the first car a lap down back on the lead lap), and when I never heard Bret say I got it I was like, ‘Hey, I’m on the lead lap. It’s time to go racing.’”
 
Frank’s outing at Stateline could have been the highlight performance of a three-week stretch of 10 races at seven tracks, including several right in his backyard. Without it, his most noteworthy run was a fifth-place finish (from the 12th starting spot) on May 24 in the WoO LMS Buckeye 50 at NAPA Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio.
 
‘Chubzilla’ was steady-but-unspectacular in his other recent WoO LMS appearances, finishing sixth and 12th in the two A-Mains that made up the Jackpot 100 by NAPA on May 25-26 at Tyler County Speedway in Middlebourne, W.Va., and registering a 14th-place finish (after starting 21st and making an early pit stop to change a tire) on May 30 at Delaware International Speedway in Delmar, Del.
 
Away from the WoO LMS, Frank spent the May 17-19 weekend racing close to home at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa. (finished third on May 17); Stateline (10th on May 18); and Eriez Speedway in Hammett, Pa. (fourth on May 19). He also competed near his shop on May 31 in a ULMS 50-lapper at McKean County Raceway in East Smethport, Pa. (dropped out early driving Rick ‘Boom’ Briggs’s second No. 99b) and on June 2 at Eriez (finished fourth).
 
Frank, who sits eighth in the WoO LMS points standings, will next make his annual early-June pilgrimage to Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, this weekend (June 6-8) for the $100,000-to-win Dirt Late Model Dream. He has started the 100-lap event eight times since 2000 with a career-best finish of third coming in ’07.
 
When asked for his thoughts about the expanded format of this year’s Dream (complete preliminary programs topped by twin 25-lap A-Mains will be run on Thursday and Friday) before departing for the high-banked, half-mile Eldora oval, Frank had a good-natured message for his longtime foil, Eldora general manager and promoter Roger Slack.
 
“I’m going out to see the circus,” joked a smiling Frank. “Roger’s in charge – that’s all you gotta say. It’s gonna be interesting.”
