Dillon Wood Finishes Sixth in WoO Action at Smoky Mountainby Ben Shelton
DAYTONA BEACH, Florida (05/01/13) – Dillon Wood took his #1w Keyser Manufacturing/Gotta Race/Rocket/Clements Racing Engine Super Late Model into battle last weekend with the World of Outlaws (WoO), and it was another up-and-down weekend for the 22-year-old competitor.
Dillon Wood resumed action with the World of Outlaws (WoO) Super Late Model tour on Friday evening as he entered a $10,000-to-win event at Smoky Mountain Speedway (Maryville, Tennessee).
With thirty-five entries in the pits Dillon piloted his #1w Keyser Manufacturing/ Gotta Race/Rocket/Clements Racing Engine/ Super Late Model to a second place finish in his heat race to lock into the redraw for the feature. In the redraw he was the recipient of the pole starting spot for the 50 lap finale with Shane Clanton joining him on the front row. Clanton grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag as Wood battled throughout the top five throughout the event. When the checkered flag dropped on the event, Wood finished sixth behind race winner, Shane Clanton, Steve Casebolt, Jimmy Owens, Josh Richards, and Billy Ogle Jr. The finish matched his best career performance with the tour. Dillon also received the Rookie of the Race bonus for being the highest finishing rookie contender.
With Saturday night's WoO event at Tazewell Speedway (Tazewell, Tennessee) falling victim to Mother Nature, Dillon Wood traveled to Duck River Raceway Park (Wheel, Tennessee) on Sunday evening.
The night started on a great note as Dillon registered the second fastest time in the thirty car field in time trials, and went on to finish second in his heat race to lock into the redraw for the feature. In the redraw Wood received the sixth starting spot, and as the 50 lap finale went green Dillon began working his way forward. By lap 34 he had raced his way into the second spot, but bad luck struck on lap 36, when transmission issues forced him to retire from the race to a disappointing fifteenth place finish.
"The run at Smoky Mountain was a great one for us, and I really think we had a chance to win at Duck River before the mechanical failure," comments Wood. "As down as we were after the Duck River deal, at least we know that we are already putting ourselves in contention for a win with the WoO tour, and that's a really good feeling."
Wood is currently thirteenth in the latest series standings and third in the rookie battle. Full event results from the event are available at
