GARDNER GARNISHES HILLTOP’S STREET STOCK GRAND; LEE & ARONHALT FLY TO CHECKERS

MILLERSBURG, OH (August 11) - Mother Nature decided to clear out and the cooler temps made for some fast racing on Susan’s Sportswear night at Hilltop Speedway as the Street Stocks were the featured class. Colt Maxwell set fast time with a 16.583 lap as Miamisburg’s Brandon Gardner, Kyle Dickinson and Todd Swim topped the heats with Jeremy Dickerson sprinting to the dash win. Gardner and Dickinson would pace the field to the green flag of the 20 lap event with Dickerson taking second on lap three as Matt Schroyer moved into third two laps later. Maxwell would bring out a caution on lap eight as he smacked the turn one guardrail as he was running fifth, that ended his night. As the race went back to green, Dickerson was working every line lap after lap to try to pass Gardner as Timmy Glassburn and Swim dueled for fifth. With the laps winding down, Gardner and his GLR, Innovative Graphics, and Schaeffer Oil #27g kept Dickerson at bay with Schroyer in third. Glassburn edged past Swim for fifth with seven laps to go and then went wheel to wheel with Dickinson for fourth. As the checkered flag flew, Gardner collected his sixth win of the season and his 38th career win at Hilltop with Dickerson glued to his back bumper. Schroyer finished third and Glassburn nipped Dickinson at the line for fourth. John Wilson bested the last chance race.     

Heat winners George Lee and Dave Hornikel would start on the front row of the Holmes Tire Late Model main with Lee sliding up to the high side of the speedway and Hornikel falling in behind Lee going into turn two on the opening lap. Dash winner Rick Bond and quick timer Doug Drown with Corey Conley riding fifth. Lee of Loudonville steadily pulled away from Hornikel as Bond was able to hang on to third until the halfway mark when Drown was able to power past him. When the checkered flag waved, the Cowen Trucking, LSI, Edge Racing Engines #61 of Lee picked up his sixth win of the season and 20th career victory at Hilltop. Hornikel finished second ahead of a fast closing Drown with Bond and Conley trailing. Charlie Duncan and JR Gentry started the night one –two in the points standings with Duncan holding just a one point lead. Both had troubles in the feature but finished right behind each other (10th & 11th) and will set up a season championship showdown next week with Duncan leading.

The Raceday Photos Modified main saw Jimmy Smith and Warsaw’s Norm Aronhalt, the heat winners, start up front but on the second lap, Jesse Wisecarver took over second from Smith. Aronhalt, driving the Finish Line Auto Body, Tri State Trailer Leasing, Tom Conley owned  #309, dashed off to a big lead using the guardrail tickling line and was never challenged to post his fourth win of the year and his 23rd career modified win at Hilltop. Wisecarver and Smith finished second and third as points leader and dash winner Ryan West, Vic Hottinger, fast qualifier Chris Basich and Beau Bradley had a race long battle before finishing in that order.      

Shreve’s Moose Workman and his #47w fought off several challenges by Brett Adkins to go flag to flag to post his first ever feature win in the Mini Stock feature. Following them across the line were Matt Kemp, Jerry Adkins and Mark Adkins as the 12 lap race went caution free. Workman, Kemp and Jerry Adkins chalked up the heat wins.

John Large swept the Bugs-R-Gone Trucks as he won the heat race and lead all the way in the feature as the Warsaw driver and his L&L Motors and Advance Auto Parts #17 parked in victory lane for the third time this season. Points leader Kevin Potts was second with Jerry Gardner, Jim Large and David Potts rounding out the top five.

Two features were run for the Putt-N-Stuff Wedges as St. Clairsville’s Brady Reed made his first trip to Hilltop this season a good one as he put the Dairy Queen #15 into the victory circle of the 1st feature as Destinie Bates, Blake Morris, Chase Osbourne and Josey Lillibridge followed. Cody Stillion of Richville and the A-1 Towing and Sign Guys #25 charged to his fifth win in the 2nd feature as Tristen Brown, Tristen Lillibridge, Lucas Shaw and Nick Large in pursuit. Osbourne, Reed, and Morris captured the heat wins.

After squeeking past on the last lap to win the Mod Lite heat race, East Canton’s Brian Stuhldreher led all the way in his #17 machine to notch his second win of the year. KC Campbell finished second as Joe Burkhead, Wayne Kintz and Andy Heath followed.

Next Saturday, August 18th will be Season Championship night for all six class’ at Hilltop Speedway. Also tickets for the Awards Banquet will be available starting next week as the Banquet will be on Saturday, November 3, 2012 at the Wooster American Legion. Information on the Week end on the Hill on September 29th and 30th will be released later this week.
