Disappointing Firecracker 100 Run At Lernerville Ends Chub Frank’s Swing Through Northeast With World of Outlaws Late Model Series 

BEAR LAKE, PA (July 5) – Chub Frank got the starting position he wanted for last Saturday night’s World of Outlaws Late Model Series Firecracker 100 at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa. He just didn’t get the finish he would have preferred.
 
The 50-year-old veteran started from the pole position and ran at the back end of the top five for nearly half the distance, but he ultimately faded and settled for a disappointing 11th-place finish in his home state’s richest dirt Late Model event.
 
“The track was good and we got a great starting spot,” said Frank, who was hoping to become the first driver from Pennsylvania to win the Firecracker 100. “The car wasn’t horrible at the beginning when we were running in the top five, but I could never get off the corner. Then after that caution about 55 laps in the car just went away. I had no sidebite and we were just holding on the rest of the way – and it’s hard to hold on when guys are coming.”
 
A problem that hampered Frank during the previous night’s second Firecracker 100 preliminary program certainly didn’t help his bid for victory in the $30,000-to-win finale. He finished 26th in Friday evening’s 30-lap WoO LMS A-Main after electrical woes forced him out on lap 21 – and prompted him to park his newest Roush-Yates-powered Corry Rubber/Hino Toyota/Horton Equipment Rocket No. 1 for Saturday’s action.
 
“We got behind because we were gonna run that other car,” said Frank. “After we had that electrical problem on Friday night and I didn’t want to take a chance running that one again. There was nothing wrong with the (backup) car, but if we had run it all weekend we might have found something and been able to tune it better. We just need to go figure it out.”
 
Frank’s best run of the Firecracker 100 weekend came in Thursday night’s first preliminary program. He won his heat race in stirring fashion – his pass of Scott Bloomquist en route to the lead drew a big cheer from the crowd – and placed ninth in the 30-lap A-Main.
 
“The first eight or 10 laps (on Friday night) the car was good, but as soon as we got hit in the left-rear wheel (in a turn-one scrape with Ron Davies while battling for a top-five spot) it just never went again,” said Frank, who started fifth in the Thursday feature. “I couldn’t find anything wrong with it, but something went wrong. We were holding on the rest of the way.”
 
Before arriving at Lernerville for the Firecracker 100 weekend, Frank competed in a pair of WoO LMS events in Canada and New York. He finished 11th on June 22 at Quebec’s Autodrome Granby and eighth on June 26 at Canandaigua (N.Y.) Motorsports Park; a third scheduled race, on June 24 at Cornwall (Ont.) Motor Speedway, was rained out and not rescheduled.
 
“We weren’t bad at Granby but our problem was my own fault,” said Frank. “I hit the inside wall and got a flat tire, so we had to pit. That’s what put us behind there.
 
“We had an ignition problem in qualifying at Canandaigua so we ended up being behind in the heat race, but we had a decent car in the feature (after starting 12th). We just couldn’t make up ground because the whole race ran under green. We just really needed some yellows to bunch the field.”
 
Frank, who ended the Northeast swing ranked fourth in the WoO LMS points standings, had a busy stretch of World of Outlaws competition on tap. He’ll embark on the annual ‘Wild West Tour,’ racing on July 6 at Amsoil Speedway in Superior, Wis.; July 7 at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn.; July 10 at Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, S.D.; July 12 at Red River Co-op Speedway in Winnipeg, Manitoba; July 13 at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, N.D.; and July 14 at North Central Speedway in Brainerd, Minn.
