Troutman wins two in a row at The Rock
CUMBERLAND, Md. -- D.J. Troutman won his second straight, and Jimmy Iser, Justin Michael and Mike Lauffer rounded out the feature winners on Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.
The win for Troutman in the Romney Cycles Limited Late Model feature came after he squeezed past a wreck that claimed leader Travis Calhoun. Iser won the Ernie D’s Street Stock race for the third time in four races. Michael became the fifth different winner in the TC Race Cars Hobby Stocks and Lauffer won his second of the season in the Sponaugle Towing 4-Cylinders.
Troutman started in the third row of the 20-lap feature and needed the first nine laps to gain the second position. Calhoun had taken off from the pole to lead comfortably by 10 car lengths. Matt Howsare and Chad Myers were running third and fourth.
The complexion of the race changed when Calhoun closed in on two cars at the back of the field on lap 11. Buddy Jones and Matt Eckman got alongside each other and touched in turn one, spinning directly in the path of Calhoun. Troutman was able to skate by without incident but Calhoun was knocked out with significant front-end damage.
After the race restarted, Troutman was in command for the last nine laps. Howsare ended up second, trailing by four seconds at the finish. Myers, Ted Gallaher and Eckman rounded out the top five.
Iser won the 16-lap Street Stock race with just a couple of car lengths to spare over Brian Duffy and Daryl Whetstone. After starting fifth, Iser arrived at the lead by passing Daryl Whetstone on lap five, just prior to a caution. After the restart, Duffy got around Whetstone for second.
Iser’s lead dwindled near the finish but Duffy’s big charge into turn three on the final lap wasn’t enough to change the finishing order. Whetstone ended up third. John Whitfield held on to fourth after a good battle near the end with Justin Bonnett, who finished fifth.
Michael’s first Hobby Stock win this season, in what has turned into the speedway’s most competitive class as measured by feature wins, came after he led the final eight circuits over Jimmy Moreland. David Riley, Brian Ringer and Kevin Van Horn completed the top five.
Michael started sixth and put his car up to second over R.T. Trouman on lap five. Moreland led from lap two until a caution on lap seven slowed the pace. Michael captured the lead with a strong run on the outside in turn three. He ended up five car lengths ahead of Moreland at the finish.
Lauffer won the 4-Cylinder race going away by 10 car lengths over Dwain Rhodes and Ian Will. He made up for an earlier restart when he nearly dropped three spots by taking the lead from Neil Bauer Jr. on a restart with three laps to go.
Bauer led up until his car developed a problem immediately as the restart got underway on lap nine. Dwain Rhodes ended up second after hanging on over Ian Will, who finished third. Dave Lambert and Shelton Lucas ended up fourth and fifth.
Racing will return on Saturday, June 23 with all four classes on ARCH Night. Gates open at 5 p.m. with racing at 7:15 p.m.
