In better weather, Altobelli, Iser among winners at The Rock
CUMBERLAND, Md. (May 12) -- Racing finally resumed with Mike Altobelli Jr., Jimmy Iser, David Riley, Ryan Peer and Brandon Inglish victorious on Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.
The race was the first since the April opener due to wet weather. Iser won the rescheduled Ernie D’s Street Stock Spring Championship while Altobelli cruised to the Romney Cycles Limited Late Model win. Riley and Peer won the TC Race Cars Hobby Stock and Sponaugle Towing 4-Cylinder features for the first time since 2010 and Inglish won the 6/8-Cylinder feature for the second straight time.
Altobelli led the entire distance in the 20-lap Late Model race, finishing ahead of Chad Myers, Travis Calhoun, Matt Howsare and Ted Gallaher. The second half of the race had Altobelli running ahead of Myers from 1.5 seconds up to 4.5 at the finish. Calhoun grabbed third from Howsare on lap nine.
Iser was in command throughout the 18-lap Street Stock feature. Shortly after the green flag waved, Iser took off with Brian Duffy following him to second. Iser led by half of a straightaway at the midway point and beat Duffy by 3.5 seconds at the finish. Justin Bonnett got by Rick Wright for third in the middle of the race. Wright ended up fourth. Kerry Molovich completed the top five.
Riley went flag to flag in the 15-lap Hobby Stock feature over R.T. Troutman, Jimmy Moreland, Justin Michael and Kevin Van Horn. The race was within reach for the top four until the halfway mark, when Riley opened up the lead from just six car lengths to 14 at the finish. Troutman had to contend with Moreland and Michael throughout the race but was able to maintain second.
Peer made two bold moves pay off in the 12-lap 4-Cylinder feature. After starting sixth, he went three-wide off of turn two to get to fourth on the second lap. Ian Will, Neil Bauer Jr. and Steve Riggleman were in the top three from the onset.
Will’s lead was in jeopardy when Riggleman got by on lap five but Bauer’s car slowed to bring out the caution and Will retained the lead. Two laps later, the final caution fell when Jason Riggleman and Nick Iski tangled.
Peer took advantage to grab the lead from Will on the restart and raced to the finish by six car lengths over Will, Steve Riggleman, Dwain Rhodes and Iski.
Inglish made it two in a row as he led the final eight laps of the 12-lap 6/8-Cylinder feature. Inglish took the lead from Ray Shepherd four laps into the race. He closed out the win by 10-car lengths over Shepherd, Brian Ringer and Daniel Wratchford.
Gates open at 5 p.m. with racing at 7:15 p.m. on Saturday, May 19 for May Madness, with double points up for grabs in all weekly divisions and kid’s bike races at intermission.
