John Garvin Jr. Returns from Georgia/Florida SpeedweeksSarver, PA (March 2, 2012) Former UNOH All Star Late Model Series Rookie of the Year John Garvin Jr. and Copperhead Racing made what has become an annual trip to the Georgia and Florida Speedweeks. Unfortunately for Garvin, the trip that started out very promising at Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, GA took an ugly turn when the team reached their final destination of Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, FL.
Garvin Jr. kicked off speedweeks by setting 13th quickest time out of the 56 total entries at the World of Outlaws Late Model Series sanctioned 'Winter Freeze' at Screven Motor Speedway on Friday, February 10. From there John would finish a strong second place in his heat race behind Winfield, TN's Mike Marlar, transferring him into the $20,000 to-win main event. After starting eighth in the 60 lap feature, Garvin Jr. battled his way to an impressive 14th place finish giving the team some confidence heading into the 'Bubba Army Winter Nationals' at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, FL.
On Thursday, February 16, Garvin and his Garvin Scrap Metal, Graff Trucking, Sarver Landscape and Garden Supply, JNJ Motorsports Media, Daugherty Motorsports sponsored Rocket Chassis arrived in Ocala, FL for the first of three nights at the 'Bubba Army Winter Nationals', that was also sanctioned by the World of Outlaws Late Model Series. John timed in 17th quick of the 51 cars to take time but ended his night early after tagging the wall in his heat race. 'For rest of the trip, the car was never the same,' Garvin said after his brush with the wall. 'Copperhead' failed to qualify for another A-Main event while competing at Bubba Raceway Park or at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, FL the following week.
'Volusia was super fast all week long and it took its toll on a lot of drivers and their equipment,' Garvin said of the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals at VSP. 'We ended up being one of those drivers after we hurt our motor on Tuesday night. We decided to pack up and head home after that to prepare for the rest of the season and to not tear anything else up. It's a long year and we didn't want to get behind this early in the season. We learned a lot while we were down there about our new Rocket Chassis that will hopefully step up our program when the season really gets rolling.'
Garvin Jr. has tentative plans to head to Mercer Raceway Park in Mercer, PA on Saturday, March 31 for the UFo sanctioned 'Chiller Thriller' as well as possible trips to Tyler County Speedway in Middlebourne, WV before the season gets to be in full swing.
