Jimmy Mars Completes UNOH DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia; Illini 100 Up Next

MENOMONIE, Wisc. (March 2) - Jimmy Mars and the Mars Racing team made the long trek south to the famed Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Florida from February 20-25 for the annual running of the ‘UNOH DIRTcar Nationals.’ Both the UMP DIRTcar Series and World of Outlaws Late Model Series sanctioned events at VSP last week and a huge field of cars filled the pit area at the Daytona Beach area speedplant. In the six-race ‘UNOH DIRTcar Nationals,’ Jimmy transferred into five feature events and recorded one Top Five finish and two Top Ten performances.

His best effort came in the $7,000 to win opener on Monday, February 20. Jimmy ran third in his heat race to earn the fifteenth starting spot in the 30-lap feature event. The Menomonie, Wisconsin standout then blew past ten competitors to notch a sterling fifth place finish behind only winner Steve Francis, Dennis Erb, Jr., Rick Eckert, and Billy Moyer. A night later, Jimmy passed eleven cars in another $7,000 to win UMP show to register a sixth place outing.

After starting his ‘UNOH DIRTcar Nationals’ out on a strong note, Jimmy unfortunately did not have much luck on his side the rest of the week. He was caught up in wrecks during the $10,000 to win World of Outlaws feature on Thursday night and his heat race on Friday afternoon before finishing a respectable eleventh in Friday night’s $10,000 to win UMP program. In the $10,000 to win World of Outlaws finale at VSP on Saturday, Jimmy won his heat race and later drew the outside of the front row prior to the 50-lapper. Unfortunately, the driver known as the “Iceman” went too hard on tires for the A-Main and wound up retiring in the twenty-sixth position.

A detailed race-by-race recap from Jimmy’s journey to the Sunshine State of Florida can be viewed by clicking on www.JimmyMarsRacing.com. His results from Volusia are noted below:

The #28 team plans to take the better part of a month off from Dirt Late Model competition and will not return to action until March 30-31 in the Land of Lincoln.
