William Thomas Claims $20k Payday in Turkey 100

by Ben Shelton
Phenix City, Alabama (11/28/11) - William Thomas entered the 11th Annual Turkey 100 over the weekend at Swainsboro Raceway (Swainsboro, Georgia), and when the checkered flag dropped on the finale he had claimed the biggest win of his career, a $20,000 payday behind the wheel of his #22 Extreme Power Sports/Zaxbys/Scorpion Crate Late Model!

Sixty-one of the nation's top Crate Late Model pilots converged at the Georgia, 3/8 mile oval for the big event, and Thomas started the weekend by setting fast time in qualifications, and then backed it up by winning the first heat race to earn the pole position for the feature event, which was shortened to 50 laps. As the race went green Thomas would bolt to the lead and would maintain the top spot during the first half of the caution-plagued feature. Just as it looked like William would be able to cruise to the easy win, Mike Marlar moved into the second spot with ten laps remaining, and applied heavy pressure to Thomas for the closing laps of the feature. However, William was able to hold him off as he claimed the biggest win of his career, which also marked the 11th triumph of the 2011 season. He was followed across the finish line by Marlar, Brandon Overton, Chip Brindle, and Brian Connor.
