Jake Griffin Finishes Second in ULMA Standings; Busy Weekend On Tapby Ben Shelton
Quincy, Illinois (10/11/11) –12 year-old, Jake Griffin may not have won the championship, for which he had hoped, but he still finished an impressive second in the final ULMA Late Model Series standings.
Jake was last in action two weeks ago as he took part in the final two ULMA point's events of the 2011 season. On Saturday night, October 1st Jake made his first trip of the year to Central Missouri Speedway (Warrensburg, Missouri), and he would face an extremely talented field of competitors as 22 cars would enter the program. After a solid second place run in his heat it would prove to be a rough outing in the feature for Jake. While battling in the top five the second place car would spin in front of Griffin, resulting in heavy right-side damage to his car. Jake would continue until lap 9, when he had to finally retire with the ill-handling entry. He would be credited with a 17th place finish in the feature.
In the UMP Open Wheel Modified division, Jake would finish third in the heat race before recording a 13th place finish in the feature.
On Sunday night, October 2nd the team rolled into 24 Raceway (Moberly, Missouri) for another night of doubleheader racing action. In the ULMA Late Model division another strong field of 15 cars entered the event in what would be the determining event for the ULMA Championship. In heat race action, Griffin advanced from the third starting spot to a second place finish to earn the fifth starting spot for the main event. He would battle in the top five throughout the feature before finishing fifth behind race winner, Rylan Long, Jason Perry, Jason Bodenhammer, and Kelly Smith. With the win Rylan Long claimed the Crawdaddy's Classic Gourmet ULMA title, but Jake still finished a very strong second, just six points removed from the lead. Even though it wasn't the championship that the team wanted it was still a solid performance, and they are very proud of their season accomplishments.
In the UMP Open Wheel Modified division, a big field of 26 entries were entered and Jake finished 5th in his heat to lock into the 21st starting spot for the feature. The main event would see him make a great run as he passed 14 cars on his way to a seventh place finish at the checkered flag.
This weekend, October 14th-15th, the team will travel to Tri City Speedway (Pontoon Beach, Illinois) for a pair of Crate Late Model events. On Friday night a $1,000-to-win event will be held, which will serve as the Pro Crate Racing Association (PCRA) finale. On Saturday night the Bud 40, UMP Pro Crate Late Model Championship will be held, which will post a $2,500 winner's check.
