Morgan Bagley Overcomes Adversity for Magnolia State 100 Top Fiveby Ben Shelton
Longview, Texas (09/28/11) – Although Morgan Bagley spent the majority of the 22nd Annual Magnolia State 100 weekend in an uphill battle, by the time that the checkered flag dropped on the 100 lap finale the driver had piloted his #14m McMillan Motorsports/Rocket By Club 29 Super Late Model to a top five finish.
McMillan Motorsports and Morgan Bagley made their first ever trip to "The Baddest Bullring in the South" Columbus Speedway (Columbus, Mississippi) over the weekend for the 22nd Annual Premier Ford Magnolia State 100. With 53 cars entered, Morgan would find himself behind the eight ball early in the weekend after struggling in time trials, which left him starting sixth in his heat. He would be unable to make up any ground in his heat, finishing in the 6th position, which resulted in him starting on the third row of his b-main on Saturday night.
In the b-main, he would quickly battle his way forward to contest the final transfer spot with Timothy Culp. The pair would have a heated battle for the final transfer position before seeing Bagley come up just short of claiming it. Luckily a last chance qualifier was held, and Bagley would win the race from the front row to earn the 25th starting spot for the 100 lap, $20,011-to-win feature.
Early in the feature, Morgan would dodge several cautions as he began racing his way forward. By the race's midway point he was up to the fifth position, and over the next several laps he would reach as high as the second spot before his groove began to go away. He would still manage to record a very strong fifth place finish behind race winner, Billy Moyer, Bub McCool, Eric Cooley, and Brian Rickman!
"To race with those guys and perform like this in such a big event is unbelievable. It was a long weekend for the team, but it ended great. We can head back home now with a big smile on our face. This is really a big deal for us," commented the rookie Super Late Model pilot, Bagley.
The upcoming weekend will see the team enter a single event as they enter the final O'Reilly SUPR Super Late Model event of the season at 171 Speedway (Leesville, Louisiana) on Saturday, October 1st. The $2,500-to-win event may mark the final series' event of the 2011 season, but Bagley has already clinched the 2011 O'Reilly SUPR crown, and will be looking to end the season this Saturday with an exclamation point.
