Momentum Builder: Chub Frank Picks Up Second Win Of Season At Lernerville Speedway BEAR LAKE, PA (August 30) – Once again an off-weekend trip to Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa., helped Chub Frank get back in the winning groove.
With the World of Outlaws Late Model Series idle, Frank visited the four-tenths-mile oval last Friday night and rode off with a victory in the 25-lap DIRTcar UMP Late Model feature. It was his second triumph of the season at a track he considers one of his favorites.
“It always feels good to get a win,” said Frank, who also won on June 2 at Lernerville. “We weren’t exactly where we needed to be, but we were pretty close. We were just trying to get the car ready for Eldora (Speedway’s World 100 on Sept. 9-10), so to end up with a win was a nice bonus.”
Driving his familiar Corry Rubber/Hino Toyota/Horton Equipment Rocket No. 1*, the 49-year-old veteran from Bear Lake, Pa., benefitted from a lap-18 tangle involving leaders Russell King and Dave Hess Jr. Both drivers were knocked from contention due to the scrape, which gave Frank new life.
“Russ and Hess were out there pretty good and I was taking it pretty easy where I was,” said Frank, who started 11th. “I was just there trying some stuff so I wasn’t gonna do anything stupid and tear the car up, but after those guys got together I restarted fourth. With the double-file that put me on the outside and things just opened up on the restart.”
Frank overtook Brian Swartzlander for the lead on lap 20 and never looked back. He held off Ken Schaltenbrand following a last-lap caution flag to record his 14th career win at Lernerville, moving him past Hall of Famer Dick Swartzlander and Dick Barton into 11th place on the track’s alltime dirt Late Model win list.
Frank, who sits fifth in the WoO LMS points standings, will return to action on the national this weekend for a doubleheader on Sept. 3 at Tyler County Speedway in Middlebourne, W.Va. (Black Diamond 125) and Sept. 4 at Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex in Markleysburg, Pa. He also plans to enter the UFO Late Model Series West Virginia State Championship event on Fri., Sept. 2, at Tyler County.
