Paulker, Lee, Drown, Frame and Hensel winners at WCS

ORRVILLE, Ohio (August 19) - The action was bad fast at Wayne County Speedway Friday night August 19th with packed grandstands and nearly 100 race cars packed the pits.

In the Super Late Model division it was veteran racer Skip Watterman and former multi-WCS track champion Ryan Markham who lead the field to the green flag. Watterman jumped out front but had Markham and George Lee as they both were plastered to Watterman’s bumper. On lap three Watterman and Markham got together bring out the caution. Both cars had to restart on the tail of the twenty one car field. This moved Lee into the lead, Shane McLoughlin into second, Cory Conley into third and J.R. Gentry to forth. McLoughlin and Conley wouldn’t let Lee get away and bird dogged the leader. On lap thirteen things Conley was working the cushion to pass McLoughlin both cars would get together causing the caution to come out again from front running racers. Lee still lead but this moved Matt Bee Aber in his first appearance this season at WCS into second. Aber was subbing for his father Blaine Aber who had a nasty racing accident a few weeks ago. Markham who went to tail was quietly working traffic as he pushed forward. Like the sprint car feature before the tight door handle to door handle racing through the pack kept the fans on the edge of their seat. On lap twenty three Lee stretched his lead but Markham and Wes Hutchinson tried to catch the leader. At the checker it was Lee collecting his third win this season at WCS. He was followed by Markham (who went to tail on lap 3), eighteenth starting Hutchinson, Aber, twentieth starting Brad Malcuit and J.R. Gentry. Winning heat races were McLoughlin, Conley and Rick Armstrong.

In the 410 Winged Sprints Aaron Middaugh and Andrew Paulker would lead the field down to the green flag. Paulker flexed his muscle early as he powered to the point. Middaugh, Jason Dolick, Norman Oklahoma’s Christopher Bell, Sheldon Haudenschild and Danny Mumaw chased Paulker. On lap two Paulker on a missile stretched a straight away lead over Middaugh. Paulker setting a blistering pace caught up to lapped traffic on lap 3. As the leader was dealing with lapped traffic Mumaw slipped past Middaugh for second place. Eyes were on National Sprint Car Hall of Famer Kenny Jacobs as he moved into fifth place from his seventh starting position on lap 5. The field was bunched up as a caution came out from Mumaw who had mechanical troubles. As the green flag dropped Paulker again stretched his lead over Dolick and Jacobs. The green flag was short lived as the as Matt Warner spun and bunch the field again. Paulker powered out front of the field but the racing behind was getting serious as Jacobs sliced under Dolick for second on lap twelve. On lap fifteen ninth starting Rob Chaney rim riding the cushion passed Dolick for third. Both Jacobs and Chaney stalked Paulker trying to close the gap on the leader. On lap seventeen the caution flew for Haudenschild who came to rest on the speedway with a flat tire. Paulker again powered to a large lead over Jacobs, Chaney and Dolick. Paulker approached lapped traffic allowing Jacobs and Chaney to close the gap on the leader on lap twenty two setting up a shootout for the top spot. Lapped traffic wouldn’t come into play as a late race caution came out for Shawn Hubler who spun out. Jacobs would give it one last ditch effort to slip pass Paulker in the final laps. It just wasn’t enough as Paulker held off Jacobs, Chaney, Dolick, Bell and sixteenth starting Broc Martin. Winning heat races were Jacobs, Chaney and Middaugh.

In the Thrifty Discount Muffler Pure Stocks Paul Whitten and Rich Frame brought the field down to the green flag. Frame jumped out to the early lead but he was pressure by Tory Gibbs, Roger Drouhard, Tim Coen and Brandon Gardner. Frame held a comfortable lead but again door handle to door handle racing was going in his rear view mirror. By mid race Gardner moved into third place and had his sights set on Gibbs and Frame. Last week feature winner Ryan Wisecarver Monte Carlo would smoke but he was able to move ahead of Drouhard and Gardner. Gibbs chased down Frame but couldn’t make a pass. As the checkered flag flew it was Frame for the second time this season coming home the winner ahead of Gibbs, Wisecarver, Drouhard, Gardner and Whitten. Heat race winners were Frame, Gibbs and Wisecarver. Dennis Amstutz won the B-Main.

In the Tri-State Modified division Anthony Kinkade and Warren Pennsylvania’s Dan Davis lead the field down to the green flag. Kinkade jumped to the point ahead of Davis, Larry Kugel, and Kevin Morehouse. Kinkade would hold the lead over the field till the caution flag flew on lap five for Darrick Hubbard who spun. The green flag dropped and Kinkade again hammered out to the point. Morehouse was muscling his way forward as he passed Kugel on the high-side and snuck pass Davis for second. By lap nine the running order would be Kinkade, Morehouse, Davis, Doug Drown, Kugel and Mark Gardiner. On lap fifteen Morehouse caught Kinkade and began applying heavy pressure to the leader. Unfazed Kinkade held true choosing the middle of the track as his preferred line. In the final laps several cautions would ensue, but Kinkade withstood the attacks of the challengers and held the lead. On the finally lap Kinkade would ride the middle in turn three but Morehouse blasted the leader causing Kinkade to spin and the caution to come out. As the cars are under caution Davis who was in second place went pit side. Morehouse was black flagged for rough driving and Kinkade was placed on the tail. This turned the win over to Drown. He was followed by Kugel, Gardiner, Sid Danals and Hubbard (who had to go to tail on lap 5).

In the Mini Stock division it was Doug Hensel and Dustin Daughterty who lead the field to the green flag. Hensel took the lead over Daughterty and Michael Workman. Chase Alexander slipped under Tim Cecil and Roger Rush and moved into third place. Daughterty and Alexander tried to close in on Hensel but were unable to make any ground. Hensel took the checkers. He was followed by Daughterty, Alexander, Roger Rush and Workman. Winning the heat race was Workman.

Wayne County Speedway will be back in action on Saturday August 27th for kids night on the card is the 410 Winged Sprints, Super Late Models, Tri-State Modifieds, Thrifty Discount Muffler Pure Stocks and Mini Stocks (Make up features for Pure Stocks and Mini Stocks from July 30th show). Pit gates open at 3:30 PM, Grandstands at 4:30 PM, hot laps at 6:00 PM and racing at 7:00 PM sharp. General admissions cost $10.00, kids twelve and under are free and pit passes are $30.00.

Kids night activities include the following: Inflatable play area, face painting, driver autographs, children can get pictures taken inside of racecars, Ice cream coupons for the first 200 kids through the door courtesy of Guerne Heights Drive In, candy, ice cream and toy give away while supplies last.
