Davis takes third win of the season at Pittsburgh’s PA Motor Speedway
PITTSBURGH, Penn. (August 13) - Rayland OH's Mike Davis, the current PPMS point leader, added to his point lead by winning his third Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic DIRTcar Super Late Model feature. Jason Rider and Davis brought the field down for the green with Rider grabbing the lead at the start. Rider opened up a lead with Davis, Daryl Charlier, and Michael Norris behind. For a while it looked as if Rider was heading to a career first LM win, but as the race wore on Davis, Charlier and Norris reeled him in. On lap 15 Rider was slowed by traffic, allowing Davis to get by. The next lap Charlier slowed with front end damage, and brought out the caution the next lap. Rider regained the lead on the restart then on lap 18 Davis took over the lead for good. Mike Johnson took over second at that point as Rider began to fade. Davis opened up a lead and won by a straight away over Johnson. Lynn Geisler was third, with Jim Stephans charging from last to 4th, with Rider falling to 5th at the checker. Rounding out the top ten was Brandon Burgoon, Ben Miley, Norris, Steve Baker, and last week's winner Alex Ferree. Brandon Burgoon and Mike Johnson won the heats.
Second generation driver Steve Beatty, North Hills PA, son of former PPMS and area champion John Beatty, won his first ever feature in the Brougher's Machine Shop Fastrak Crate Late Models. Beatty used an outside front row starting spot to grab the lead at the start and led the entire distance. While Beatty was out front the battle for second was where the action was with Justin Lamb and point leader Colton Flinner battling for that spot. Lamb ran second until Flinner got by on lap 15. As the pair went down the back straight, Lamb and Flinner got together and Flinner went spinning and collected Dustin Curry. Flinner's car was heavily damaged but was able to continue, while Curry's damaged car was not. On the restart Beatty lead with Lamb in second and young Nico Dabecco now in third pressuring Lamb for second. At the finish it was Beatty, Lamb, Dabecco, Mark Moats Jr., Scott Schempp, Beau Glemba, Mike Opalinski, Chuck Medved, Tom Klein, and Flinner. The heats went to Ken Chernik and Beau Glemba.
Wayne Carbo Saxonburg PA's won his second Sunoco Race Fuels UMP DIRTcar Cadets of the season and second of the weekend, as he also won on Friday night. Carbo started 9th and worked past early leader Dave McManus on lap 9 and led the rest of the way. McManus ended up second followed by Nick Kocuba, Jake Simmons, Gary Koteles, Craig Koteles, Curt Bish, Josh Langer, David Janus, and Pat Weldon. Jake Simmons and Nick Kocuba won the two heats.
In the Miley RV Service UMP Modified Feature, it appeared that J.E. Stalder won his third feature in a row over Clayton Kennedy but some controversy in tech for the front running pair left the finish in limbo and officials will make a decision Monday. Bruce Dreistadt led the first lap before 12th starting Stalder took over on lap 2. Stalder began to battle with Clayton Kennedy on lap 3 and the pair put on a wild side by side battle for the top spot. Kennedy took over the top spot on lap 9 and 10, with Stalder had the lead again on lap 11. Kennedy was back out front on lap 12, before Stalder took the lead back for good on lap 13. At the finish it was Stalder, Kennedy, Bruce Takach, Vince Laboon, Tom Martineck, Bruce Dreistadt, George Nicola, Denny Nakutis, Tyler Atkinson, and Rich Curry. The heats were won by Denny Nakutis and Clayton Kennedy. Kevin Miller and Chris Basich did not start the feature after problems in their heats.
The Miley BP Car Wash DIRTcar Hobby Stocks saw a wild finish with Pittsburgh PA's J.J. O'Patchen won a career first feature. Richard Wilson grabbed the lead at the start from his front row starting spot and battled with Chase Evans all the way, coming to a head on the last lap in turns 3 and 4, when the pair tangled allowing third running O'Patchen (who started 2nd) to get by and get the win. Wilson recovered to finish second followed by Evans, Steve Hoschar, Brian Huchko (subbing for Ed Wiser), and Ricky Steigerwald. Ricky Steigerwald won the heat.
The Imperial Heights Garage Young Guns had Moon Township PA's Adam Carson win his career first main. Carson was followed by Zack Stehle, Bernie Blair Jr., Peter Brock, Logan Crewl and Todd Weldon.
