William Thomas Claims Michael Head Jr. Memorial Win

by Ben Shelton
Phenix City, Alabama (August 2) - William Thomas continued his strong season on Saturday night by powering his #22 Extreme Power Sports/Mastersbilt/Lamar Hunt Racing Engine Super Late Model to the victory in the 14th Annual Michael Head Jr. Memorial.

After a relaxing week on the beach the team returned to action with the Southern All Stars Series on Saturday night at Talladega Short Track (Eastaboga, Alabama) for the 14th Annual Michael Head Jr. Memorial. Twenty-nine Super Late Models entered the event, and in time trials William qualified 8th fastest to lock into the 8th starting spot for the $5,400-to-win feature.

As the feature went green, William would waste little time racing his way to the lead as he moved past early leader, Billy Ogle Jr. As the race progressed Ogle Jr. would make another run at Thomas for the lead, but William would go on to drive away from the field on his way to the biggest Super Late Model win of his career in just his second night out in the team's new Mastersbilt car. Tim Busha, Billy Ogle Jr., Brandon Kinzer, and Terry Smith rounded out the top five in the 54 lap event. The win was his second career Super Late Model win, and by far his biggest payday in the division! With the win Thomas further extended his lead in the series' overall standings and rookie standings.

The upcoming weekend, August 4th-6th, will be a busy time for William and the team, as he intends to enter three events in three days. On Thursday night he will travel to North Georgia Speedway (Chatsworth, GA) for a $5,000-to-win, unsanctioned event. Friday night will find Thomas in action at Boyds Speedway (Ringgold, GA) in a $3,000-to-win, Southern Regional Racing Series (SRRS) program. On Saturday evening he will conclude the weekend with a $5,000-to-win, Southern All Stars (SAS) event at Cleveland Speedway (Cleveland, Tennessee).
