Top-Five Run In Wyoming Sends Chub Frank Home From ‘Wild West Tour’ On A High Note BEAR LAKE, PA (July 21) – Chub Frank ended his week-long stint on the World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Wild West Tour’ on a high note, finishing fifth in Tuesday night’s ‘Cowboy 50’ at Gillette (Wyo.) Thunder Speedway.
The 49-year-old standout from Bear Lake, Pa., also registered finishes of eighth on July 13 in the ‘Gopher 50’ at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., and 11th on July 15 at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, N.D. A fourth event, on July 12 at Independence (Iowa) Motor Speedway, was rained out and rescheduled for Aug. 8.
“We had a decent trip,” said Frank, who ended the stretch tied for sixth in the WoO LMS points standings with Shane Clanton. “We still aren’t qualifying well enough (his fifth-fastest time at Gillette was his only time-trial effort that cracked the top-15), but at least we went forward in the features.”
Frank’s best run in his Corry Rubber/Hino Toyota/Horton Equipment Rocket No. 1* came at Gillette, a one-third-mile oval that returned to the WoO LMS schedule after a one-year absence. He started ninth and inched his way to a fifth-place finish on a track that took rubber early in the A-Main distance, making passing difficult.
“We’ll take a fifth,” said Frank. “We were O.K. in the slick, but I don’t know if we would’ve been O.K. or not if it had stayed slick. Once it rubbered up everybody got tight – I don’t think anybody was on the right tire – and we were able to hold on and even pick up a spot to get to fifth.
“(Darrell) Lanigan and (Tim) Fuller getting together on the start helped us because it got us another row forward for the restart, and then that second restart we got (Rick) Eckert and couple other guys. Then (Pat) Doar just was so tight he couldn’t steer in the rubber so we got by him too (for fifth on lap 37).”
While Frank was relatively quiet in the frenetic River Cities A-Main (he started 14th), he was one of the biggest movers-and-shakers in the ‘Gopher 50’ at Deer Creek. He marched forward from the 19th starting (he qualified by finishing second in a B-Main) to place eighth.
“Our car was actually really good on restarts,” Frank said of his Deer Creek effort. “We got loose when we got out and running in the open though, so I would’ve been a lot happier with a few more yellows. When everybody was slowed down and bunched up, the car was really good. We picked up all of our spots after the two (early) restarts.”
Frank’s next WoO LMS action will come in three events in his home state of Pennsylvania: July 26 at Dog Hollow Speedway in Strongstown; July 27 at McKean County Raceway in East Smethport; and July 31 at Eriez Speedway in Hammett.
