Chub Frank Salvages 12th-Place Finish At Winchester, Looks Ahead To This Weekend’s Firecracker 100

BEAR LAKE, PA – June 21, 2011 – Chub Frank got in a final tune-up at Lernerville Speedway and ended a month-long break from World of Outlaws Late Model Series competition at Winchester (Va.) Speedway last weekend.

Now the veteran driver known as ‘Chubzilla’ has his sights squarely set on the fifth annual WoO LMS Firecracker 100 this weekend (June 23-25) at the four-tenths-mile Lernerville oval located in Sarver, Pa.

Frank, 49, of Bear Lake, Pa., enters the Firecracker 100 weekend, which features 30-lap, $6,000-to-win preliminary A-Mains on Thurs., June 23, and Fri., June 24, and the $30,000-to-win 100-lap finale on Sat., June 25, with three top-five finishes in as many visits to Lernerville this season. Last Friday night he finished fifth in the track’s 25-lap DIRTcar UMP Late Model feature.

“I’m looking forward to the Firecracker,” said Frank, who scored a win and a second-place finish in his previous starts at Lernerville earlier this season. “I’d love to win that 30-grand, but it’s gonna be tough. I’m not even sure what car I’m gonna run yet.”

Frank entered his newest Corry Rubber/Hino Toyota/Horton Equipment Rocket No. 1* in last Friday night’s program, but its performance on a faster, tackier track surface than he had raced on earlier this year left him uncertain if it will be the right machine for the Firecracker. He thinks there’s a good shot the track surface might not get as slick as usual for the 100-lapper because weather forecasts for the weekend do not call for extremely high temperatures and clear, sunny days.

“I want the track to be 19 seconds (a lap),” said Frank, stating his preference for a slick surface this weekend. “If the track has a lot of traction and is 17 seconds (a lap), then this new car doesn’t seem like it will like it as much. We’ll have to see what happens.”

Frank has started all four previous Firecracker 100s with a top finish of fifth to his credit, in 2007. He’s also recorded finishes of sixth (’08 and ‘10) and 12th (’09).

Last weekend also got Frank back on the road with the WoO LMS after the national tour sat idle since May 12. He salvaged a 12th-place finish in the Gunter’s Honey Spring 50 at Winchester after using a provisional spot to start 23rd.

Frank timed 11th-fastest in the 30-car field and started fourth in the second heat race, but he and fellow WoO LMS regular Tim Fuller were swept up in a turn-two tangle early in the prelim when J.T. Spence went around in front of them. Frank retired to the pit area with front bumper and nosepiece damage that had to be hastily repaired.

Despite just one caution flag midway through the race to slow the action in the A-Main, Frank managed to work his way forward to the verge of the top 10.

“The car was actually good and we were going to the front,” said Frank. “From the dead-last row, finishing 12th was O.K. That heat race just put us too far behind.”

Frank remained sixth in the WoO LMS points standings through 11 events this season, 120 points behind leader Rick Eckert.
