Positive Vibes: Chub Frank Adds Sponsor & Wins First Feature Of 2011 At Lernerville Speedway

BEAR LAKE, PA (June 8) – The first weekend of June was good to Chub Frank.

Not only did the 49-year-old veteran from Bear Lake, Pa., snap a run of bridesmaid finishes with his first feature win of 2011 last Friday night (June 3) at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa., he reached Victory Lane with a new sponsor logo gracing the flanks of his familiar Corry Rubber/Hino Toyota Rocket Chassis No. 1*.

Frank went to the post in Lernerville’s weekly DIRTcar UMP Late Model show boasting a freshly-minted sponsorship deal with Horton Equipment, a Pennsylvania-based business that backs the dirt Late Model racing efforts of Frank’s cousin Rick ‘Boom’ Briggs. Frank’s agreement with Horton Equipment will run for the remainder of the season, giving his travels on the World of Outlaws Late Model Series a needed boost.

“We’re real happy to have Horton Equipment on board,” said Frank, who ranks sixth in the current WoO LMS points standings. “I’m glad we were able to get a win the first night out.”

Frank controlled the action at the four-tenths-mile Lernerville oval, steering his machine past Corey Conley for the lead on lap five of the 25-lap feature and never looking back. He wasn’t seriously challenged en route to his 13th career win at the track.

The triumph was Frank’s long-awaited first of the season and followed a month-long stretch in which he had finished second in four of his last five starts, including a May 20 event at Lernerville. He drove the same Rocket car that he debuted two weeks earlier at Lernerville with an eye toward the track’s upcoming WoO LMS Firecracker 100 weekend on June 23-25.

“We tried some different stuff on the car than we did the first time we ran it (at Lernerville),” said Frank. “We did more normal stuff this time, and the track was different too. The track was slippery – which was good, because it was more like it’s gonna be for the Firecracker. It was dead-smooth and you could race all over it, from top to bottom. You couldn’t ask for a better racetrack.

“We still need to work on (the car), but it was pretty good. We’ll probably go back (to Lernerville) next Friday (June 17) on the way to Winchester (Speedway in Virginia for a WoO LMS event on June 18) to spend one more night trying some stuff before the Firecracker.”

Frank also entered the Dick Litz Memorial event on Sunday night (June 5) at Eriez Speedway in Hammett, Pa., but he had a short outing. He was involved in a tangle early in the feature and decided to retire from further action, finishing 26th.

‘Chubzilla’ will head to Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, this weekend (June 10-11) for the $100,000-to-win Dirt Late Model Dream event. He has started the 100-lap feature seven times since 2000, with his career-best finish of third coming in 2007.
