The stars of the Carolina Clash have their eyes set on Lancaster Motor Speedway in Lancaster, SC for their 40 lap, $4,000 to win event on Saturday, April 30. Along with the $4,000 to win purse, the Carolina Clash drivers will be vying for their share of the $2,000 in contingency awards and prizes that are presented at every Carolina Clash event in 2011.
On April 9th, the Carolina Clash made its way to Lancaster where 29 drivers signed in before the weather turned ugly and hail and tornados were in the area. So far this season, the Carolina Clash is averaging 30 high caliber cars who are the best super late model drivers in the southeast at its first three events. On April 30, Lancaster Motor Speedway will see another stout field of super late model drivers descend on the half mile clay oval for competition.
This past Friday night, the Carolina Clash made its way to Cleveland County Speedway where Luke Roffers set fast time in XS Power Racing Batteries Qualifying along with fending off the hard charging 25 car starting field to win the Comp Cams Feature. The win was Roffers second of the season which helped propel him to solo possession of first in points over Mike Gault and 2010 defending Carolina Clash Champion, Dennis Franklin. Roffers is currently on a two race win streak with wins coming at Fayetteville and Cleveland County.
Hometown favorite Chad Paxton currently leads the Klotz Lubricants Rookie of the Year standings with two Top 10 finishes already on the season in just three events. Paxton has taken the Carolina Clash by storm with strong runs at tracks that he has never raced on before. The young kid on the block, Travis Yow currently sits second in the Klotz Lubricants ROY standings followed closely by another hometown favorite, Mike Huey. Yow and Huey are separated by just a mere two points.
So far this season, the Carolina Clash has seen a completely new group of drivers sitting atop the standings. Roffers in just his third year of competition with the Carolina Clash currently leads the championship points over newcomer and Gaffney, SC native Mike Gault. Paxton sits fifth in overall championship points in his rookie season followed closely by Virginia native, Kennie Compton Jr. who already has a win with the Carolina Clash which occurred last season at Wythe Raceway in Virginia.
Last season the Clash headed to Lancaster where Ross Bailes set fast time and lead the first 17 laps of the race until the eventual race winner, Jeff Smith surpassed Bailes on a lap 18 restart. Smith made a power move coming out of turn 2 and down the backstretch passing Bailes on the inside and sailing off for the win.
In 2009, the Carolina Clash went to Lancaster twice during the year in which Ricky Weeks set fast time during the spring and Johnny Pursley was quickest in the fall event. In the spring event, Dennis Franklin was able to motor his way to a win then in the fall Tim Allen was able to outlast and outrun the field for the victory.
