Chris Ferguson Scores Runner-Up Finish in Ultimate Season Opener Mt. Holly, North Carolina – Chris Ferguson and his CFM Race Team kicked off their 2011 campaign in Saturday night’s Ultimate Racing Series season opener at the Modoc Speedway in Modoc, South Carolina. The Mt. Holly, North Carolina dirt late model pilot debuted his brand new Warrior Chassis in spectacular fashion by taking fast time honors and leading 46 of 50 laps in the feature. Ferguson had to settle for a runner-up finish however when he got hung up behind lap cars with only 4 laps remaining. Ferguson initially slipped back to third when Casey Roberts and Chris Madden both slipped past him on the high side of flat 3/8ths of a mile oval. Madden made the move by Roberts on the final lap and Ferguson was able to follow suit and pick up second place. While he was disappointed he didn’t get his first win of the year Ferguson was elated with his first run in the new Warrior. “We are very happy with how our car performed. I can’t say enough how much I appreciate Sanford and all they guys at Warrior. They have built us an awesome race car. It was good to have a bunch of the Starrette Trucking guys here with us tonight and have a good run for them. I also need to thank Randy Clary for some awesome power under the hood. It was really a great way to start out the year and hopefully that will give us momentum heading into a big weekend of racing next week.” Ferguson said.
Ferguson led Roberts by a comfortable 6 car length margin with 10 laps remaining. But when Ferguson began to encounter backmarker traffic his momentum was slowed allowing Roberts and Madden to draw to his rear deck. “We caught Daniel (Baggerly) and he was racing for position with another car. They were running in the bottom where we had been running the entire race. I knew I was losing time to those guys behind me. I thought about trying the top but I watched Jonathan Davenport try it a few laps earlier and he slipped back and lost some spots. So I committed to the bottom. And that’s when Casey and Chris rolled me. I guess I should have tried the top but I felt like I was where I had to be. You know I think we had the race won there but lapped traffic is a part of racing. Those guys didn’t do anything wrong, they were racing too. The track had pretty well locked down and passing was tough. We won’t make any excuses. We were there and should have won it so the guys and I will just go back to the shop and get ready for next week.” Ferguson added.
Ferguson and his team will head to the Carolina Clash sanctioned Skyler Trull Memorial on Saturday, March 12th at Carolina Speedway in Gastonia, North Carolina and round out the weekend on Sunday, March 13th in Gaffney, South Carolina at Cherokee Speedway’s rescheduled March Madness event. Ferguson is very excited about both events. “The Skyler Trull Memorial is very special to me personally. We won it back in 2009 and that one is still near the top of my biggest career wins. I grew up and around the Trulls and they are like family to me. So this is always a race I want to run well in. I appreciate Carolina Speedway and Carolina Clash putting the race on. It’s just special. And March Madness is a race I have watched since I was a kid. We have had some really great runs at Cherokee the last few times we have been there so I hope we can put another one together this week. Carolina and Cherokee are really my home tracks so we will have a lot of friends and supporters there to watch and we want to do a good job for them. Give them something to cheer about.” said Ferguson.
