14 Year Old, “Lil Wil” Herrington Won 1st Time Ever Late Model Feature at Cochran Motor Speedway
By: Arlene Pittman Every boys dream is to race something. Rather it is bikes, 4-wheelers to cars. “Lil Will” Herrington had that chance and brought home the big time trophy this past Saturday night at Cochran Motor Speedway in Cochran Georgia. With one of the largest crowds this year at Cochran Motor Speedway, it brought everybody to their feet with this very popular win.
Herrington qualified 3rd, allowing him to start 2nd row inside of a full field of super fast dirt late models. The field was filled with veteran top quality drivers. On front row was Keith Edge along with Dennis McDaniel. Herrington in his Rookie year also knew he had a storm behind with drivers like Mitch Fulford, Eric Register, Philip Pittman along with many more. Herrington drove hard to make the pass for the lead on lap 5. With numerous cautions, Herrington kept his cool in the cockpit of his Warrior dirt late model. Going through his mind, “can this be true, is this really happening”, hearing every little nut and bolt on his car wishing for the white flag lap. The closer to the end the more the track dry slicked over. Driving as hard as he could to keep the lead he knew he had to be smooth with the surface turning to dry slick the closer he was to the checkered flag. With a perfect set-up from his team, he was able to drive every lap like one of those veterans chasing him for the lead.
“Lil Wil” was raised in Cochran, Georgia by Glen and Pam Herrington. Wil came from a racing family with his father Glen racing everything from bomber to dirt late models for teams that was proud to have him. Glen had always been a very competive driver and continues to be so. The day came though when son said he wanted to drive. Mother, Pam, informed Glen this was going to happen. Now every Saturday night there is “Lil Wil” driving his 2004 Warrior with father crew chiefing.
“Lil Wil” started racing at age 12 with his first feature win after only 6 races. Wil went on to win 8 more races and the 2009 Georgia State Championship. He also finished 3rd at East Alabama Motor Speedway National 100 in the cruiser division of that same year. In 2010 at the age of 13 he started racing his 2004 Warrior dirt late model and has had several top 4 finishes and one win.
Herrington proud to have Herrington Automotive for his primary sponsor and LastAir & Electrical, Up & Rolling Tire Center, and MGM Industrial Contractors on board for secondary sponsors. As all other teams, money is hard to come by and he realizes what it takes to make this happen each Saturday night.
