Chub Frank Shoots For Second World 100 Victory This Weekend With New Colors On His Familiar No. 1*



BEAR LAKE, PA – Sept. 9, 2010 – Chub Frank’s familiar No. 1* dirt Late Model will have a colorful new look when he drives it on the Eldora Speedway high banks to chase his second career World 100 globe trophy this weekend (Sept. 10-11).

The veteran racer from Bear Lake, Pa., is set to debut a limited-edition, green-and-black color scheme on his Corry Rubber/Hino Toyota Rocket car in the prestigious 40th annual dirt Late Model blockbuster at NASCAR star Tony Stewart’s famed half-mile oval in Rossburg, Ohio. He’ll also have a complete line of apparel and diecasts featuring his new look available throughout the weekend at the Slavic Corporation merchandise trailer parked on souvenir row outside turns one and two.

Frank, 48, has no reservations about going with the color green, which many racing railbirds traditionally link to bad luck on the racetrack. Though Frank crashed and failed to qualify for the 2007 World 100 the last time he ran a green car at Eldora (that mount featured a ‘Chubzilla’ theme), he enjoyed much more success than misfortune with the green machine.

“That green car made me a lot of money,” said Frank, who used the ‘Chubzilla’ graphics for the remainder of the 2007 season. “We won the Dirt Track (World Championship) with it (to the tune of $50,000) – and we sold a lot of t-shirts and diecasts too.”

Frank, who won the World 100 in 2004, will attempt to make the event’s A-Main field for the seventh time in his career. He made the cut last year, finishing 15th in the 100-lapper.

Frank enters the big weekend in western Ohio coming off an up-and-down holiday week of racing that included World of Outlaws Late Model Series stops on Sept. 1 at Mohawk International Raceway in Akwesasne, N.Y., and Sept. 5 at Tri-City Speedway in Franklin, Pa., as well as an O’Reilly All-Star Late Model Series event on Sept. 3 at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa.

Mohawk’s 100-lap ‘Battle At Eastern Door,’ which was rescheduled after rain struck the four-tenths-mile oval on Aug. 21, produced a seventh-place finish for Frank. He was hoping for more after setting fast time and winning a heat race during qualifying night on Aug. 20 and then drawing the pole position for the A-Main, but his car’s handling went away slightly after he led the race’s first 26 laps and he slipped backward.

“When they started dirtying the track up I couldn’t steer,” said Frank, “and I wasn’t as good down on the bottom like those other guys. I think if they’d have moved the (inside uke) tires out a little bit it would have been a helluva racetrack because there was a little too much traction down low, but what are you gonna do now?”

Four other Chub Frank Racing-affiliated cars competed in Mohawk’s inaugural $20,000-to-win spectacular, including Frank’s backup machine with Mohawk DIRTcar 358-Modified regular Carey Terrance behind the wheel. Terrance, whose Twin Leaf Convenience store was displayed as a sponsor on Frank’s car, drove to a 12th-place finish, finishing one lap down.

CFR sponsor Peter Mantha Jr. of Gatineau, Que., meanwhile, drove the CFR car he owns to a 15th-place finish at Mohawk, while Frank’s cousin and shop partner, Rick ‘Boom’ Briggs, finished 16th in his No. 99b and fielded his backup mount for DIRTcar big-block and 358-Modified star Dale Planck, who registered an impressive eighth-place finish in just his third career dirt Late Model start.

Frank was back in action on Sept. 3 at Lernerville, where he’s won three weekly-show features this season. He started second in the 50-lap All-Star A-Main and ran there for more than half the distance. On lap 28, however, contact with the lapped car driven by Herman Bertonini sent Frank sliding through the infield; he recovered in time to limit his fall to only fourth place, but he wasn’t able to recover in the clean-and-green event and finished in that position.

After the opening night of Tri-City’s ‘Oil Region Labor Day Classic’ on Sept. 4 was rained out and not rescheduled, Frank experienced a frustrating evening of action on Sunday at the half-mile oval. He struggled all night, timing 25th-fastest, transferring through a B-Main and finishing the 50-lap A-Main two laps down in 16th place.

“That was the worst this car has been since we brought it out (in late July),” Frank said of the former Gregg Satterlee-driven machine that he purchased from western Pennsy racer Bob Close. “It just wasn’t right all night. I think I had something bound up…we definitely have to figure out what the problem was.”

Frank is currently ranked ninth in the WoO LMS points standings with four events remaining on the 2010 schedule. His next Outlaw start is Sept. 18 at I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Mo.
