Chub Frank Returns To Mohawk International Raceway On Wednesday Night For Postponed ‘Battle At Eastern Door’ With High Hopes

BEAR LAKE, PA – Aug. 31, 2010 – Twelve days later, Chub Frank is returning to Mohawk International Raceway in Akwesasne, N.Y., to try finishing what he started.

After setting fast time and winning a heat during the four-tenths-mile track’s World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Battle At Eastern Door’ weekend qualifying program on Aug. 20, Frank and the rest of the national tour’s traveling stars watched rain postpone the following night’s $20,000-to-win, 100-lap A-Main to Wed., Sept. 1. Now he’s hoping to pick up where he left off when he rolls his Rocket No. 1* back on the track.

“We just need a good top-five finish up there,” Frank said of the refurbished facility in upstate New York. “It feels good that we finally got a fast time and won a heat (on the WoO LMS) this year, but we’ll see what happens in the feature. It’s a hundred laps so nobody knows what to expect, but I think it’ll probably slick up and I don’t know if our stuff’s good enough in the slick yet.

Frank, 48, of Bear Lake, Pa., will join the two other heat winners and three prelim runners-up on Aug. 20 in a redraw Wednesday night for the top-six starting spots in the 100-lapper. His car will also once again carry the logo for Twin Leaf Convenience Gas & Tobacco, a business on the St. Regis Mohawk Indian Reservation that is operated by Mohawk International DIRTcar 358-Modified regular Carey Terrance, who made a deal to drive Frank’s backup car in the ‘Battle At Eastern Door.’ Terrance fell one spot short of transferring through a heat race on Aug. 20, so he’ll run the B-Main on Wednesday evening.

Frank’s visit to Mohawk on Aug. 20-21 came in the middle of a busy Northeast swing for the WoO LMS. After the opening event on Aug. 18 at Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, Pa., was rained out, Frank registered finishes of seventh (started 12th) on Aug. 19 at Rolling Wheels Raceway in Elbridge, N.Y.; ninth (started 10th) on Aug. 23 at Quebec’s Autodrome Drummond; and 10th (started eighth) on Aug. 24 at Brewerton (N.Y.) Speedway. All three events were contested over the 50-lap distance.

“I think the car was pretty good (during the stretch of action),” Frank said of the former Gregg Satterlee-driven Rocket machine that he recently purchased and, unfortunately, had to rebuild after flipping it in a multi-car tangle on July 30 at Attica (Ohio) Raceway Park. “We’ve just been missing on tires (compound choice) way too much and we gotta quit doing that. You hate to ruin your night by picking the wrong tires.”

Frank’s WoO LMS trip through the Northeast was highlighted by one very unique sight: at the Autodrome Drummond event, there was an army of five Chub Frank Racing-affiliated cars lined up in the pit area ready for action. Frank fielded his backup car for Terrance once again; French Canadian Peter Mantha Jr. drove the CFR-prepared car that he owns (and allows Chub to use as a backup); and Frank’s cousin, Rick ‘Boom’ Briggs, entered the race with his own machine and put DIRTcar big-block and 358-Modified driver Dale Planck, who drives for Terrance’s team, in his backup mount. Planck enjoyed the best night of the group, finishing 12th in his dirt Late Model debut; Terrance placed 18th, while Mantha was 19th and Briggs finished 20th.
