The Bluegrass Classic was added to the Bluegrass Speedway racing docket in 2001 during the second year of the current promotional tenure of David and Anita Ferrell and Bob Pierce of Oakwood, IL would take the $7,500 payday on the first weekend of August that year. Pierce would return and take the win again in 2002 as the Northern All Star Late Model Series would sanction the race and it would pay $10,000 to win. Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN would break the “Tall Cool One’s” handle on the race when he claimed the NALMS sanctioned event in 2003. Illinois would reign supreme again in front of the ESPN2 cameras in 2004 as Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, IL would score the win in the race sanctioned by the North American Racing Association. The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series would begin sanctioning the event in 2005 and this would be the beginning of the “Black Sunshine” era as Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN would start 15th and finish first in the 2005 event and would roll back to Bluegrass in 2006 and score the win in what many consider the best Super Late Model feature event ever contested at the track, with Bloomquist making it three straight victory in the race with a win in front of the SPEED TV cameras in 2007. Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN would stop “Zero’s” supremacy by winning the 2008 version of the event, while Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC would hit paydirt with a win in the 2009 event and is the defending race champion.
