FASTRAK NORTHEAST LATE MODEL TOURING SERIES TREKS NORTH TO WOODHULL SATURDAY FOR FIRST EVER TOURING EVENT IN NEW YORK; CURT VANPELT TO MAKE FASTRAK DEBUTBy Mike Leone
Woodhull, NY…After events in central Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio the last two weekends, the FASTRAK Northeast Late Model Touring Series will trek north into New York this Saturday night, August 21 at Woodhull Raceway. The 25-lap $1,500 to-win event will mark race #15 on the 20-event Touring slate.
Woodhull is under the first year of ownership by successful car owner Ted White. Saturday’s event not only marks the first ever event at Woodhull, but the first ever Touring Series event for FASTRAK in the state of New York. While some of the FASTRAK competitors have competed at Woodhull in Super Late Model events or support classes, Woodhull will be for the most part neutral ground and its high banks should provide an interesting challenge for the cars and stars of FASTRAK.
“We have followed the FASTRAK Late Model Series with great interest over the past season,” stated White. “After months of conversations with FASTRAK Northeast organizers, marketing partners, Woodhull Raceway fans, as well as many current Woodhull competitors, the decision was made to add the FASTRAK Touring Series to the 2010 Woodhull Raceway schedule of events. Everyone is pumped and ready for this very exciting form of Motorsports!”
One driver that needs no introduction to what’s dubbed as “New York’s toughest bullring” is Curt VanPelt. The Wellsville, New York driver is anxiously looking forward to his FASTRAK debut Saturday. The standout veteran has been a successful New York Late Model and Modified racer over his long storied career (won the 1987 DIRT 358 Championship), and has made Woodhull his home for many years. He most recently drove Ted White’s Modified along his brother Billy. Curt will be behind the wheel of Bill Law’s #21 on Saturday.
“We really have to thank Ted White for giving us an opportunity to come to Woodhull,” stated Northeast Co-Director Vicki Emig. “I would be remised if I also didn’t mention longtime announcer and PR director Kenny Shupp and FASTRAK car owner Bill Law, who have worked hard to push for a FASTRAK event at Woodhull. We’re always trying to get more events for the northern part of our FASTRAK region, as there is a strong contingent of racers in northwest Pennsylvania and the Southern Tire of New York. Hopefully Saturday’s event will be a good one and will lead to more events in the future.”
The 2010 Northeast Touring Series has been a very competitive one with nine different winners in 14 races. Mike Pegher, Jr. leads the way with four wins, but Max Blair’s third win of the season last Friday night at Raceway 7 broke the tie with Pegher as he regained the lead in all-time victories at eight. Other winners this season have included Mike Blose, Josh Holtgraver, Robbie Blair, Jonathan Davenport, David Scott, Gary Knollinger, and Joe Martin.
Blair, the 2008 Northeast Touring and National Weekly Series Champion, is again currently leading both of these championship races in 2010. The 20-year-old Centerville, Pa. driver currently has a 49-point lead over Pegher with six events remaining in the Touring Series. Butch Lambert sits third in points, just 21 behind Pegher, and has been very consistent with 10 top 9 finishes in the past 12 events including three runner-ups, a third, and a pair of fourth place efforts.
Justin Kreider continues to lead the new “Wheelman” Bonus Event Challenge Series. The Linesville, Pa. driver finished fourth in the non-qualifier event last Friday at Raceway 7 and now leads Jason Genco by 28 points. Genco of Jamestown, New York has been victorious in the past two non-qualifier events at Sharon and Raceway 7 as he’s just missed out on transferring to the feature by one spot both nights.
There have been 48 races contested with 22 different winners all-time in the Northeast Touring Series. Blair leads Pegher eight to seven followed by Dick Barton, Bobby Powell, John Lacki, and Davis Scott with four, Alan Dellinger with two, and Todd Andrews, Kyle Drum, Frank Guidace, Butch Lambert, Carl McKinney, Dennis Lunger, Jr., Tom Snyder, Jr., Chris Meadows, Jim Frank, Blose, Holtgraver, Robbie Blair, Jonathan Davenport, Gary Knollinger, and Joe Martin with one victory.
