Davenport Speedway Racers Driving Towards Season Championships DAVENPORT, Iowa (August 10, 2010) – After the annual break for the Great Mississippi Valley Fair, the Davenport Speedway is primed for some dirt track stock car racing. Beginning with this Friday, August 13th, only three point races remain in 2010 season and the battles for the track championships will be contested every lap along the way.
The 2010 season has been a wet one at the Davenport Speedway, as a handful of rainouts has shortened the season considerably. It has also helped to keep the point standings tight in all five weekly divisions.
The Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Model season has been an exciting one to watch as seven different drivers have captured feature wins in the eight races held this season. Ray Guss Jr. (Milan, Ill.) has one feature win and leads the point standings with 306 points. Mike Garland of Morrison, Ill., is currently second and heads a list of five drivers that are within 13 points of one another. Garland is followed by Matt Ryan, defending national champion Kevin Blum, Mark Preston, and Stephan Kammerer.
Guss is also leading the IMCA Late Model National point standings as well. Nine of the top twenty drivers in IMCA National Late Model Points have competed in weekly action at the Davenport Speedway this season.
In the Goacher Towing Service Pro Mod division, Doug Crampton of Rock Island, has four victories, but holds only a four point lead over John Bull in the standings. Bull has one feature win. Third place in points, Bob Dominacki, has two feature wins this season. Thad Wilson has one feature win and is fourth in points.
The Koehler Electric Street Stock class is led by Matt Werner of Geneseo, Ill., with five feature wins. Davenport’s Cary Brown is second in points, eight markers back, and has two feature wins.
Jerry Pratt of Blue Grass, has put up the big numbers this season in the Engineering Maintenance Service IMCA Modifieds. Pratt has four victories in 2010, and holds a 34-point lead over second place Andrew Burk. Mike Fluegel and Todd Dykema, third and fourth in points respectively, are within 9 points of second place Burk.
The 4 Stock class has been exciting, entertaining, and leading the way with the most disqualifications this season. The top three drivers have recorded all eight feature wins and are separated by only 10 points. Kevin Haury has two victories and leads the points, second place Luke Thurness and third place Mike Morrow each have three wins.
The racing action will return to the Davenport Speedway quarter-mile dirt oval on Friday, August 13th. That evening will be Kile Motorsports’ Kids Night, featuring bike races and giveaways for the kids. Children 12 and under are admitted free with paid adult.
The August 20th racing program will include a Davenport Speedway Kids Club candy dash, sponsored by the track’s officials. The 2010 Season Championships will be run on Friday, August 27th.
Pit gates at Davenport open at 4 p.m. and the grandstand opens at 5pm. Hot laps are at 6pm and racing starts at 6:30pm.
The Davenport Speedway is located at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds, on West Locust Street, in Davenport.
