Chub Frank’s Promising Ohio-Speedweek Takes Turn For The Worst With Flip At Attica Raceway Park


BEAR LAKE, PA – Aug. 3, 2010 – Chub Frank’s promising ‘Ohio-Pennsylvania Speedweek’ took a definite turn for the worst last Friday night at Attica (Ohio) Raceway Park.

After kicking off the five-race swing by driving his newly-constructed Rocket car to a pair of top-10 finishes in its first World of Outlaws Late Model Series starts, Frank was swept up in a massive multi-car tangle on a lap-23 restart during Friday’s 50-lap A-Main at Attica. He ended up rolling over once, heavily damaging the car he felt very good about enough to trailer it for the week’s remaining events.

Frank, 48, of Bear Lake, Pa., was uninjured in the wreck, which began when third-place Matt Miller ricocheted off leader Josh Richards and second-place Darrell Lanigan exiting turn four and spun around in front of the onrushing field. ‘Chubzilla’ had no place to go and over-ran Miller, sending his car into a single barrel-roll on the homestretch before it landed on its wheels.

Though Frank said his new car – a former Gregg Satterlee-driven machine that he recently purchased from western Pennsy racer Bob Close and debuted with a weekly-show victory on July 23 at Lernerville Speedway – didn’t feel “great” on Friday night, but he was still in contention for a top-10 finish at the time of the accident. He felt the wreck should have been avoided, maintaining that Miller shouldn’t have restarted in third place because he had slid off the backstretch with Russell King moments earlier in a tangle that brought out a caution flag.

“He was off the track with King and the yellow comes out,” Frank said of Miller. “Then they (officials) put him back up front and he causes a big crash that takes out the whole field. He just came across right in front of me and I didn’t have no place to go.”

Frank, who flipped a race car for just the second time in over 30 years of racing, had entered Attica’s program with confidence that his 2010 struggles on the WoO LMS were turning around thanks to his new Corry Rubber/Hino Toyota car. He finished seventh in the 40-lap Speedweek opener on July 27 at Central PA Speedway in Clearfield, Pa., and 10th in the 50-lapper on July 29 at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio (a race postponed one day by rain), making the A-Main redraw with second-place heat finishes both nights. He was disappointed about falling from his pole position start to seventh at Central PA (he led the race’s first five laps), but he attributed that to using an incorrect tire compound for track conditions.

After absorbing a 21st-place finish at Attica, Frank was forced to use his backup car in the final two 50-lap races of the weekend and couldn’t get a handle on it. He qualified through B-Mains and finished one lap down in 19th in both – July 31 at Muskingum County Speedway in Zanesville, Ohio, and Aug. 1 at one of his old hometracks, Eriez Speedway in Hammett, Pa.

“The week started out O.K. but ended poorly because of getting that new car all torn up,” said Frank, who remains ninth in the WoO LMS points standings after 33 events. “The chassis isn’t hurt, it just got every mount torn off it. My other car didn’t have no traction and didn’t have no sidebite (at Muskingum and Eriez), so we struggled.

“I’m gonna try to work get (the new car) fixed in time to take it to Wisconsin this week, but I don’t know if we’ll make it. I have Peter’s car (Canadian racer and sponsor Peter Mantha Jr.) to use, but I’d like to run this new one. I really like it and think it will be good for us once we get it dialed in.”

Frank returns to action this week with a WoO LMS trip to the Badger State. He’ll compete in a 50-lap, $10,000-to-win event on Wed., Aug. 4, at Shawano (Wis.) Speedway before heading to Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wis., on Aug. 5-7 for the 23rd annual USA Nationals, which is topped by a $50,000-to-win 100-lapper.
